Many wore hand-knit “pussyhats” – a message of female empowerment aimed squarely at Trump’s crude boast about grabbing women’s genitals.

The march – which started out on the National Mall but soon sprawled and spilled into several other streets in downtown DC, served as a balm for the women and men who were similarly alarmed about what Trump’s presidency might mean for them.

More than a million people joined rallies around the world to protest against Donald Trump on his first day as U.S. president.

Anyone planning to march was able to download a pattern to make their own hat from the project’s website, or make them and send them to others who plan on marching in Washington.

“Sometimes we must put our bodies where our beliefs are”, she told the Washington crowd, labeling Trump an “impossible president”. “I don’t want to be silenced, and I don’t want other people to feel like this is OK”. “And I don’t like that this country is now in fear”.

Her nieces, ages 14 and 9 followed the election closely she said, and they were “terrified when he won”.

“I would like to hand out pacifiers to the protesters so they can have something to bite on for the next four years, just like I had to swallow it for the past eight years”, she said.

Trump has angered many liberal Americans with comments seen as demeaning to women, Mexicans and Muslims, and anxious some overseas with his inaugural vow on Friday to put “America First” in his decision making.

More than half a million people also swarmed the streets of Los Angeles, according to police there, and a similar number gathered in NY.

WILLIAM BRANGHAM: Is there any concern that, because this march is happening the day after Trump becomes president, and is clearly targeted in some ways at the Trump administration, that you might alienate a part of the country who may have supported Trump or may have been a Republican, or that you might end up driving people away because this is seen as a partisan day?

“Everyone should have access to STD testing, contraceptives, and basic healthcare”, Lisa of Burlington, Vermont told i24NEWS. We will not go from being a nation of immigrants to a nation of ignorance. America Ferrera supported Hillary Clinton as a presidential candidate, and even campaigned for her during the time leading up to the election.

March organisers said women are “hurting and scared” as the new president takes office and want a greater voice for women in political life.

Women with bright pink hats and signs begin to gather early in Washington for the anti-Trump protest.

That’s part of “being an active participant in our democracy”, she added.

He denounced previous US policies that he said have subsidized militaries of other countries, allowing for the depletion of the USA military, policies that have defended other nations’ borders before America’s and measures that have resulted in spending trillions of dollars overseas before spending money on rebuilding America’s infrastructure that Mr. Trump said has “fallen into disrepair and decay”.
