Trump threatens to send ‘feds’ to Chicago over rise in shootings

In a tweet on Tuesday, Trump stated that if Chicago doesn’t fix the growing crime problem, which he slammed as “horrible carnage“, he will resort to federal intervention to quell the violence.

Last year was the deadliest year in Chicago for the nearly 20 years with 762 murders, 3,550 shooting incidents, and 4,331 shooting victims.

At the White House, press secretary Sean Spicer said the president was suggesting various forms of aid to Chicago to help it better enforce the law, “either through the US Attorney’s office or other means that will ensure that the people of Chicago have the resources to feel safe”.

Historically, the city’s homicide rate has been of concern for decades, even as other causes of death have waned.

For his part, Emanuel did not directly address Trump’s apparent threat of imposing martial law in Chicago.

He also tweeted year-to-date statistics reported by the Chicago Tribune on Monday.

A statement from the Chicago Police Department on Tuesday night said the city’s law enforcement would welcome an interagency effort.

Emanuel is also asking for more interagency collaboration between the local police department and federal entities like the FBI and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms and Explosives, in order to better track illicit guns.

Trump could encourage those agencies to up their game in violence-torn cities. (Talk about American carnage.) It seems that the new President hasn’t forgotten about it either and he took to Twitter this week to deliver something of an ultimatum to Mayor Rahm Emanuel…

“You didn’t get elected to debate the crowd size at your inaugural”, Emanuel said.

“More jobs, not jails”, she said.

On Twitter, Trump said that, if the violence fails to subside, the federal government would intervene.

In response to the federal investigation, Emanuel agreed to enter a court-enforced agreement with the Justice Department to enact sweeping police reforms.

Having represented in court or watched my fair share of misguided young men who use weapons to rob and kill – and seen them cry real tears when judges sentence them to 25 to life – I know most of these types ain’t ’bout that shooting-at-the-military life. “We are going to get them out and we are going to get them out fast”.

In 2014, a Chicago Police Department report claimed of the 60 percent firearms recovered from crime scenes between 2009 and 2013 that came from outside the state, about 19 percent came from IN, which happens to be the state of Vice President Mike Pence.
