Oyongo, Cameroon book Africa Cup of Nations final after beating Ghana

February 03 07:02 2017

Cameroon secured their spot in the Africa Cup of Nations final after securing a 2-0 win over Ghana in their semi-final tie at the Stade de Franceville.

Michael Ngadeu Ngadjui took full advantage of a defensive mix up to break the deadlock on 72 minutes.

Panathinaikos midfielder Wakaso tested keeper Fabrice Ondoa will a brilliant bending free-kick, and Newcastle’s flying winger Atsu saw his angled strike drift past Cameroon’s upright by inches.

The Africa Cup of Nations final is looming, and with Egypt already in, it’s time to see who they’ll be playing.

Bassogog, 21, is one of many “second-choice” Cameroon players who only got their chance to travel to Gabon after eight first-team members withdrew prior to the tournament, due to a perceived lack of expectation that they would go almost this far. Watch this space again next week, as we keep a pace with the final games of AFCON 2017.

Manager Avram Grant claimed his side did not deserve to lose, and suggested that the loss of captain Asamoah Gyan to injury was a big factor in their semi-final exit.

Cameroon had a superb game and their defence was on point as they managed to contain the threat posed by the Ayew brothers. “There were a lot of opportunities for them to kill the game in the early minutes”.

“I am more than unhappy”.

“I think he has brought a bit more discipline because before, I won’t say there was no discipline, but it is something he has really focused on”.

Fabrice Ondoa had precious little to do in the Cameroon goal until early in the second half, when he had to be alert and courageous to beat Andre Ayew to a low cross from his brother Jordan. He’s good for us.
