Will the famous phrase “Houston, we have a problem” be used by commentators during the Super Bowl LI television broadcast, and will any Atlanta Falcons or New England Patriots be caught on camera kneeling during the national anthem? In fact, I look forward to the Big Game every year-but for different reasons than most.

“What better way to get awareness than to put it in front of a hundred million fans on super bowl sunday“, said Seth Kaufamn, CMO of Pepsico North America. Rice University professors say it could also attract investors.

The cost of a 30-second advertisement during this year’s Super Bowl rose to an astounding $5 million, and that means companies will want to get the most value for their investment.

The research was based on a sample of 5,776 firms.

Traditionally, ads that air before or after the Super Bowl itself aren’t very successful at drawing eyeballs. If sales are the goal, the general answer has to be “no”. This year will see even more celebrity integrations, with famous faces “starring” in this content. Avocados of Mexico will feature Jon Lovitz as a mesmerizing talking head, and John Malkovitch appears in a sly sendup of “Being John Malkovitch”, for Squarespace.

“The Super Bowl is the largest congregation of the drunkest experts in the world”. But there are ads to sell, and a game to promote, so sadly, that’s not what we’re going to get. CBS wrung out 7% more in pre-game, in-game, and post-game advertising than NBC did for its Super Bowl broadcast the prior year, according to Kantar Media, a tracker of ad spending.

Novelty is about breaking through the clutter.

And, for Super Bowl LI, Fox Sports will also keep a tighter rein on the bit-rates of its HD streams.

Those who reside in Canada and have a cable TV subscription for CTV, will be eligible for free live-streaming access for all Super Bowl matches on their iPhone or iPad via the CTV Go app. That unique workflow and this additional, coordinated work undertaken by the internal advertising teams will help to reduce the risk and improve the delivery of that streamed video, Poolman explained.

One thing that may make the Super Bowl livestream seem a little more relevant this year for viewers across the country will be Fox dynamically inserting local ads. During the next year’s Super Bowl, that number skyrocketed to 106.48 million before jumping to 111 million the next season. Fox’s advertising guidelines say it will not air ads “for viewpoint or advocacy of controversial issues”, in this case referring to President Trump’s executive order calling for a wall along the US border with Mexico. Some, like Frito-Lay’s CMO, are willing to admit the error of the brand’s ways and end a decade-long run at the Big Game.

About 45 to 55 commercials usually air during the average Super Bowl. The other is EDS Herding Cats from the 2000 Super Bowl, where, unusually, using cute animals is integral to the ad message, as the metaphor of managing complex IT projects as “herding cats” is brought to hilarious life.

I’ll give you two.
