Kyle Shanahan wants Matt Schaub as San Francisco 49ers QB

The wait is over.

Perhaps Lynch’s most important attribute is the fact that presumptive head coach Kyle Shanahan wanted to work with him.

Thirty-six days after the 49ers fired head coach Chip Kelly, they hired Falcons offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan to replace him today.

San Francisco is considering Patriots linebackers coach Brian Flores, 35, and former Jaguars linebackers coach Robert Saleh, 38, for that position, the San Francisco Chronicle reported. Shanahan called passing plays on three of the next four snaps, which included a sack and a holding penalty that pushed Atlanta out of Matt Bryant’s field-goal range. The 49ers have plenty of questions that need to be answered on both sides of the ball this offseason, as they finished with the league’s worst defense in terms of yards and points allowed and with the NFL’s second worst offense in terms of yards gained. But, when I talked to (Falcons quarterback) Matt Ryan and the players on this team, they spoke of the leadership and the presence that Kyle had in front of that room.

Viewers were expecting an offensive performance like they have been seeing all season from an explosive offense that scored 540 (33.8 points per game) points this season and 80 points through two playoff games prior to the Super Bowl. “That’s why we let them get back into the game”.

The 49ers announced the long-expected news less than 24 hours after Atlanta lost to New England, 34-28, in overtime in Super Bowl LI in Houston.

According to ESPN, Shanahan has always “liked and respected” Schaub’s play dating back to the QB’s tenure with the Houston Texans. He completed just one pass in three attempts for the Falcons this season and threw 10 touchdowns to 14 interceptions in his last season of regular play in 2013. If Kirk Cousins somehow hits the open market, he could appeal to the 49ers based on Shanahan’s time as Washington Redskins’ offensive coordinator. When McDaniels stepped aside and the Niners focused their attention on Shanahan, Seattle assistant head coach Tom Cable also opted out.

It’s impressive lineage, and there’s no doubt that Kyle is eager to build his own legacy in San Francisco.

“I don’t know, it’s the first time I’ve had this feeling, ” Shanahan said.

Shanahan walked on at Duke as a wide receiver in 1998 before transferring to Texas.

The Falcons closed out the Georgia Dome in historic fashion with an NFC title, and will play their next home game in the brand-new Mercedes Benz Stadium next door.

In surveying the landscape of head coaching candidates available, this year’s group didn’t come with much sizzle.
