Northeast braces for another blast of snow, high winds

Sleet or freezing rain may mix with the snow and make travel conditions risky across the Mohawk Valley, Syracuse-area and Capital Region. A blizzard watch was in effect on Cape Cod, with a storm surge of 1 to 3 feet possible, according to the National Weather Service.

The map below gives a general idea how much more snow you can expect from about 8 a.m. until it ends this afternoon. South of I-287 it could turn to all rain.

Conditions will begin to improve for Boston as the storm moves up the coastline towards Portland by Monday evening.

In order to meet the criteria of “bombing out”, the central pressure of a low-pressure system must drop at least 24 millibars within 24 hours. This process occurs too late to have major impacts for the Hudson Valley… but it will create a blizzard for much of SE New England.

The storm is expected to intensify through Monday, resulting in heavy snow and high winds that could lead to risky conditions on the roads, possible flight delays and power outages.

Snowfall rates of 2 to 4 inches are expected, especially where thundersnow occurs.

New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo urged residents to prepare for the storm and has readied state agencies for its arrival.

Hazards could include heavy, blowing snow that could possibly accumulate 6 to 11 inches total.

The storm will gradually pull away Monday, allowing for sunshine and gusty winds throughout the day.
