Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is meeting President Donald Trump in Washington, D.C., for the first time on Monday, in a visit that will include bilateral discussions on a host of issues and a joint media availability in the afternoon. Do you believe that President Trump’s moratorium on immigration has merit on national security grounds?
John F. Kennedy and John Diefenbaker didn’t get along either, and Richard Nixon wasn’t much of a fan of the Prime Minister’s father, Pierre Elliott Trudeau.
The comments almost derailed Trump’s long shot presidential campaign.
In the weeks leading up to this meeting, there have been many overtures and meetings at lower levels. “It’s definitely the policy of laying low”.
“We need to make sure our economy is a place where women can work and thrive”, Mr. Trump said as he opened the roundtable discussion with nine top executives from the USA and Canada. “Maybe a certain toughness but it’s really more than toughness, it’s a stance of common sense and we are going to pursue it vigorously and we don’t want to have our country have the kinds of problems that you’re witnessing taking place not only here but all over the world”, the president continued.
In Canada, both conservatives and liberals feel that NAFTA, implemented in 1994, has been a key element in their country’s economic well-being by enhancing trade between Ottawa and Washington to the point where they are now the world’s two top trade partners.
The stakes are high for Canada. The country sends about 75 percent of its exports across its southern border to the United States and 98 percent of its oil exports.
The leaders were questioned about the issue of trade 22 years after the North American Free Trade Agreement was implemented by President Bill Clinton’s administration – a pact that Trump has promised to renegotiate.
The post was quickly criticised by users as “insensitive”, as thousands protested against President Trump’s “immigration ban”, which has been denounced by civil rights groups as discriminatory. A Trump adviser says Canada shouldn’t worry, however.
Canadian pollster Nik Nanos said Mr Trudeau faced the same pressure all Canadian leaders did when they engaged with U.S. presidents: keeping the economic ties tight but not appearing too chummy or subordinate. While staying cordial, Trudeau also wasn’t needlessly ceremonious with the U.S. president, focusing on the roundtable participants instead of the partnership.
Mr Trump’s daughter Ivanka attended the meeting and helped recruit participants and set the agenda. The good news is, Trudeau managed to escape Trump’s handshake of doom!
Within days of Trump being sworn in January 20, he signed executive orders than temporarily ban travel from seven mostly-Muslim nations and refugees coming into the United States.
Another commented: “Trudeau resisting Trump’s weird handshake is the biggest display of dominance in the history of Canada“. “Diversity is our strength #WelcomeToCanada”.
Trump and Trudeau also have a “working lunch” prior to a news conference at which trade is again expected to become a major topic. Canadian observers just hope it remains civil.
“This is a delicate situation here”.
