Devos like Trump, A Close Call

Trump referred to Frederick Douglass, an abolitionist who has been dead for more than 120 years, as “an example of somebody who has done an unbelievable job and is being recognized more and more”.

“Parents no longer believe that a one-size-fits-all model of learning meets the need of every child”, DeVos said at her Senate confirmation hearing on January 17. “Our intention was not to exclude anyone from the process, and so I hope we can now move forward together to create a genuine conversation about the future of our schools with the public we serve”.

“She should be able to do her job”, he added. He did not mention the charters in DeVos’ home state of MI, which some in education policy have called the “wild west” of charter schools. It’s a win-win, especially for Latinos and other minorities, who are disproportionately locked into our state’s poorest schools.

The lawmakers said they would like assurances that “this website will not be stripped down in any way” during DeVos’ tenure as well as a timeline of what went wrong, what corrective action is being taken, information about any changes being made to the site and when the site is expected to be operational again.

“She should have at least been a principal or been on the school board”. The comment came after the principal of a Northern Virginia special education center said her school had shifted its population to accommodate more students with autism. No nominee has ever stated their opinion on defending schools from bear attacks. “But she’s the secretary now and I’m eager to work with her”.

Past education secretaries for both Democrats and Republicans had either worked as an educator or held positions within government attached to education initiatives.

Cucchiara said a lot of people in the USA believe the public school system is failing.

DeVos has pushed to make education mimic a free-market economy, which stops education from looking like “a giant monopoly” to education economists who share her similar views, said Will Jordan, an urban education professor at Temple. Protests against DeVos have spread throughout the country, alleging that her views on federal funding towards voucher programs and charter schools would weaken the public education system.

Public schools need more money than private schools. “Students should not be trapped in a system that puts the status quo ahead of a child’s success”. This person is Betsy DeVos.

This confirmation has been historical, as the Senate vote was deadlocked at 50 votes for and 50 against, including two republicans who voted against her. Therefore, traditional public schools will never match private schools or charter schools.

“We also believed – and still believe – that her narrow ideologically driven view of our schools does not stand up to the facts”.
