Watch Chance’s moment below.
Winning Best New Artist, the 23-year-old Chicago native joins an elite class of Black artists to do so, including Natalie Cole, Sade, Mariah Carey, Toni Braxton, Lauryn Hill, Alicia Keys, John Legend and Esperanza Spalding. Clearly, he’s very grateful to all that came together to make this win happen.
The night is still young, but Chance The Rapper has already won his first Grammy. Yet he’s pals with former President Obama and single-handedly forced the Grammys to change the rules to allow free streaming-only releases to be considered for awards. Chance’s wins – hell, his nominations alone – highlight an effort by the Recording Academyto catch up to a new era: where we turn to our Apple Musics, Spotifys and Tidals for our tunes over near-mythical CD stores (#RIPRhythmHouse). Pitchfork reports that Chance the Rapper had much to say in his “Best Rap Performance” Grammy speech, in disbelief that he had found himself standing in the winner’s circle. Thank God for this.
Meanwhile, Drake congratulated Chano for walking away with the awards, even though he lost to him in the categories of Best Rap Album and Best Rap Performance.
He added, “I love my family”. Right now, the online system only works for two Chance songs, “No Problem” and “Summer Friends”. Macklemore, sensing the backlash and perceived racial bias behind his win, sent a text to Kendrick, and then posted it on Instagram.
You might remember that Chance the Rapper began his “Magnificent Coloring World Tour” previous year right here in San Diego at SDSU’s Cal Coast Credit Union Open Air Theatre on September 15 – and we’re stoked to have him back so soon.
“Chance the rapper built his whole base off touring”, Anthony Saleh, CEO of the artist-management firm Emagen Entertainment Group, said in October at the New Yorker Tech Fest.
