Paris Saint-Germain beats Barcelona with 4-0 score

February 17 05:36 2017

Members of the Barca board remain in the dark when it comes to their coach’s intentions and were already looking at possible successors before the damaging defeat in Paris, which has left the Blaugrana on the verge of elimination from the Champions League. PSG were eliminated in the 2013 and 2015 quarterfinals.

Emery guided Sevilla to Europa League glory in each of the past three seasons and once again proved his worth on the European stage despite having managed just one win over Barca in his previous 23 attempts with Sevilla and Valencia.

From first whistle to last, Barcelona were bullied by their hosts, with Angel Di Maria, Edinson Cavani and Julian Draxler causing havoc in the final third. The Argentine winger received overwhelming applause from the home crowd as he was substituted by Lucas in the 61st minute. Draxler, who underperformed at Wolfsburg, has excelled since his January move to the French capital. The Uruguayan striker sprinted to celebrate the goal with fans at the other side of the stadium.

PSG become the sixth team after Chelsea, Bayern Munich, AC Milan, Dynamo Kiev and Valencia to score four goals against Barcelona in a Champions League match.

PSG reached the semi-finals way back in 1995, and have made the quarters in each of the past four seasons, but it remains to be seen if Emery’s European record will continue in 2017.

Paris Saint-Germain crushed FC Barcelona by 4-0 to take a lead in the last eight of the Champions League.

The French champions wasted little time in getting at Barca, with Angel Di Maria’s superb free-kick on 18 minutes a reward for their fast start.

“They outplayed us and we never had a clear idea of the game”, Barcelona midfielder Andres Iniesta said.

Luis Enrique certainly has a big job on his hands to lift spirits, as Barcelona were run into the ground by a vibrant PSG side on Tuesday.

Enrique has been under pressure throughout the season after some less-than-convincing displays from his Barcelona side, and they now sit second in La Liga, one point behind league leaders Real Madrid – but they have already played two more games than Real. It is an extremely complicated result, but I am very proud of how we played tonight. PSG deserve great credit for their performance but Barca were terrible.

Led by the indefatigable running of midfielders Marco Verratti and Blaise Matuidi, and the craft of Adrien Rabiot, PSG closed Barcelona down incessantly, before breaking forward at pace and stretching the creaky Catalan defense down both flanks. “Winning 4-0 against Barcelona on the day of my birthday is incredible”, Di Maria said.
