At the moment, all the Champions League does for Arsenal is give their fans a few jolly outings to the continent, and give the club a few extra games to play. But for the faithful decked out in red and white, every year feels like footballing purgatory.

“We faced the best team in the world, but it’s a pity that we made so many mistakes with the ball because we usually don’t do that”, Napoli coach Maurizio Sarri said.

“I think we understand the enormity of it”.

There was an intent on Arsenal’s part to press the opposition to begin with, but they were unable to get close to Bayern, who started with a swagger.

Thomas Mueller came off the bench for Lewandowski to net their fifth two minutes from time to complete Arsenal’s misery. They never won it.

“We just have to be at our game, hopefully win, and as long as it is 0-0 we can nick one and cause another big upset”.

Wenger, perhaps because he has been in such an unquestioned position of power at Highbury and the Emirates for so long, has either stubbornly refused to accept where his team is going wrong or, just as bad, has failed to do anything about it. “I do not work here for 20 years not to care about this club”. Chelsea have won the Premier League four times and the Champions League once.

That is the kind of company Arsenal used to keep.

A statement on the group’s Facebook page reads: “We, as Chileans are exhausted to watch one of our biggest stars play on his own to make his team get through”.

Wenger was already polarising the opinions of Arsenal supporters after hopes of a first Premier League title since 2004 fell by the wayside following two defeats in their last three domestic fixtures.

However, Wenger was more forthcoming about who would play in goal with David Ospina starting ahead of Petr Cech because of the Colombian’s performances in the competition this season.

As expected though, Wenger confirmed that to let the focus remain on the club rather than his own future. Questions will be asked of the Arsenal boss, and this result will do little to alter the growing feeling that this will be his final season in charge. Wenger may point to Koscielny’s unfortunate departure as a game changer, but the loss of one player should not have resulted in such a disastrous collapse.

“It’s been very hysterical – the coverage of Arsenal this week – and it has been hysterical for probably about a year or so”, Perry told the Jim White show.

At 10/1, the layers are still of the view that Wenger will at least see out the season, when attention may turn to who will take on the daunting task of replacing the most successful manager in Arsenal history.
