Egypt says committed to two state solution along 1967 borders

Still, the two reacted positively to his proposal and tried to convince Netanyahu to accept it.

An official told the AP that it appeared Netanyahu would only offer vague steps to build confidence and was more interested in meeting Abbas and some Arab leaders.

The officials said opposition inside Netanyahu’s hard-line government, which is dominated by nationalists opposed to Palestinian independence, presented a formidable obstacle. While his ban on Muslims from seven Muslim majority countries entering the U.S. is being challenged in courts, his National Security Adviser General Mike Flynn has been forced to resign for his telephonic conversations, during the transition period, with Russian ambassador.

‘I’m looking at two-state and one-state, and I like the one that both parties like.

Herzog said the two-state option was a pre-condition for any broad-based regional initiative.

Many around the world are seized with the Israel-Palestine issue, an emotional one especially for Muslim communities, he noted.

After eight years of testy ties with Barack Obama, Netanyahu seems to be relishing Trump’s warm embrace. That means bolstering Palestinian self-rule in big cities while building roads and bridges to ease movement across the West Bank.

Public Security Minister Gilad Erdan, a member of the security cabinet, struck an eager note the same day, calling the Trump administration “very, very supportive” and saying that a peace deal could be possible with a new “real partner” in the White House.

But in a joint press conference last week, behind the warm smiles there were signs of trouble ahead.

Speaking on Monday, Jamie Hyams from the Australia Israel and Jewish Affairs Council labelled the petition against Netanyahu’s visit as disappointing.

“It is now critical for Israel’s closest friends and allies to send a clarion clear message to both Tel Aviv and Washington that the abandonment of a two-state solution is unacceptable”, Rudd said.

“Let’s try and talk and reach an agreement”.

The signatories write that it is time for the suffering of the Palestinian people to stop and for “Australia to take a more balanced role in supporting the application of global law and not supporting Mr Netanyahu and his policies”. It is not just about territory: the Palestinians still in theory demand a “right of return” to Israel proper for millions of descendants of Palestinian refugees living around the region and the world, which the vast majority of Jewish Israelis reject. Even some Palestinians are looking around and wondering if now is the best time to test the ability of their society to stand on its feet against a backdrop of Middle East upheaval.
