Indian engineer Srinivas killed in US: Is it racial discrimination?

February 25 08:43 2017

Both the men were engineers for Garmin, and have been identified as Srinivas Kuchibhotlaand Alok Madasani.

Kuchibothla worked at Garmin, as did his co-worker, Madasani.

Grillot said that he learned the wife of Alok Madasani, who was critically injured, is five months pregnant and that he considers the engineer his new best friend, the Kansas City Star report said. Madasani was subsequently released from the hospital, and Grillot is recovering.

Take the shooting that happened on Wednesday night in a bar in Olathe, Kansas, for example.

The incident comes amid a tense atmosphere in the United States, as evidence grows of increased hate crimes since the contentious presidential campaign and the election of Donald Trump.

Federal officials on Thursday joined local public prosecutor Steve Howe when he charged Purinton with pre-meditated and attempted murder.

After Kuchibhotla’s death, his wife Sunayana Dumala said reports of bias in the USA make minorities afraid as she questioned “do we belong here“. As activist and writer Simran Jeet Singh put it, “Islamophobia doesn’t just hurt Muslims”.

Authorities are investigating whether a triple shooting at a Kansas bar, which resulted in one death, was a bias crime.

To quote Singh again, “To those who claim “All Lives Matter” – Where’s your outrage about this Indian immigrant murdered in a hate crime?”

The accused gunman, 51-year-old Adam Purinton, was taken into custody by police in Clinton, Missouri, after fleeing on foot from the scene of the shooting. My heartfelt condolences to bereaved family.

The US embassy in New Delhi condemned the shooting, saying in a statement that the US welcomes people from across the world to visit, work, study and live.

But before making that decision, “I need an answer”, she said.

Ian Grillot, an American who tried to save the Indians, remained hospitalized in fair condition.

Speaking at a news conference on Friday in Kansas, the victim’s wife, Sunayana Dumala, said she had questioned whether it was safe to live in the USA in the current political climate after President Donald Trump’s election.

“Anything less will be an injustice to the victims and their families”.

“I thought all the trouble was over with, and we were all just sitting and watching the game minding our own business”, Grillot told the affiliate. India’s foreign minister Sushma Swaraj wrote on Twitter that she was “shocked” by the incident.

Purinton, a Navy veteran, was booked in the Henry County, Mo. jail and appeared before a judge on Thursday afternoon, where he waived his right to fight extradition.

Olathe Police Chief Steve Menke declined to comment on the reports of racial comments, but said they were working with the FBI “to investigate any and all aspects of this horrific crime”.
