LG launches G6 flagship smartphone at MWC

February 26 10:11 2017

LG has launched its latest flagship smartphone, LG G6 at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona. The video has been titled, “LG G6: Life with Small” and is 36 seconds long. The LG G6 follows the company’s “Less Artificial, More Intelligence” theme. LG has, through its longstanding partnership with Dolby, chose to make this phone HDR capable. More about the Univisium aspect ratio, the 18:9 aspect ratio or 2:1 ratio, is “the flawless composition” according to LG and was important for the company to adopt to it, said Vittorio Storaro, Cinematographer. So, it’s a giant of a phone, right? That’s probably the reason why the G6 will be a complete departure from the G5.

With the G6, the design and display are intrinsically linked.

The LG G6 comes with a 5.7-inch QHD+ display with a resolution of 2,880 x1,440 pixels.

That larger display will be put to good use.

The larger display enables some cool camera tricks, too. One of them is a 13-megapixel standard lens with f/1.8 aperture and 71 degrees viewing angle while the other has f/2.4 aperture with a whooping 125-degree wide angle. And, surprisingly, LG is sticking with a wide-angle secondary rear camera rather than going for a system for faking a bokeh effects, a la Apple’s approach.

What’s proven quite successful, however, is the dual camera concept, first implemented on the V10’s selfie shooter, and then promoted to the rear cam on the G5. LG has confirmed that the taller display will enable users to see more information on the G6. Both are 13-megapixel sensors, with the aim of helping a smooth transition between them and consistent results from whichever camera you happen to be using. Like a year ago, the cameras also feature optical image stabilization.

The non-removable battery is another important factor, especially for fans of the brand. The LG G6 is powered by a 3,300mAh battery and supports Qualcomm’s Quick Charge 3.0 technology, meaning the device can be powered by 50 percent in approximately 35 minutes.

Most tech fans praised LG for launching the G5 past year. For all the headphone traditionalists, you’ll be pleased to know that there is a 3.5mm jack nestled in the top edge, while the Type-C port joins a speaker and microphone on the bottom. Adding to that strength, the phone body is also IP68 certified against water and dust. We are live on the floor and LG has been kind enough of providing us a review unit a day before launch, so we’ve already spent some time with the phone. Only Dolby Vision can provide this astonishing image quality because Dolby works with everyone involved in bringing you entertainment – content creators, streaming services, and device makers. Not that the Snapdragon 821 SoC is bad, in fact it has been the flagship chipset that offers a balanced power, performance and efficiency. Underneath the hood, we have a Qualcomm Snapdragon 821 processor with 4GB of LPDDR4 RAM. When it hit the market, the Samsung Galaxy Note 7 was the first phone with HDR 10. Fortunately, there’s still a microSD card slot, and this one can handle cards up to 2 TB in capacity.

Also found on the back of the G6 is a fingerprint sensor, but no volume buttons like previous LG handsets. The front 5MP snapper supports full HD (1080p) making it ideal for video calls. For those who are not aware, Google Assistant is the artificial intelligence created by Google, which was earlier limited to Pixel and Pixel XL. LG made a decision to take the familiar and somehow boring path of the chocolate bar design of smartphones.

When it comes to using those cameras, LG sees them as operating independently in almost every aspect.

The LG G6 has a fairly sleek design, with a metal frame and glass back cover. It’s a lovely phone with a gorgeous, 18:9 screen and very good specs. Till then join us for more from MWC 2017 here on The Mobile Indian.

We will admit, as is the case with any non-Google phone, that LG’s software is a somewhat of an acquired taste.

Three colors will become available for the G6: Astro Black, Ice Platinum (with a special brushed finish covered in glass), and Mystic White.
