Now John Kelly, Trump’s pick to lead the Department of Homeland Security, issued a memo to various other immigration agencies and the White House requesting federal funds and manpower to carry out the orders. A safe community needs an effective police department. It looks to revive and expand a program allowing local law enforcement officials to participate in immigration enforcement activities.
But the new Department of Homeland Security memos are reviving a not-so-old Department of Homeland Security program, 287 (g), that would erase that jurisdictional separation.
In two memos published February 20, the Department of Homeland Security outlined guidelines that White House officials said would enhance enforcement of immigration laws inside the country as well as prevent further unauthorized immigration into the U.S.
Essentially, your local police officers would become immigration officers.
Hailey Police Chief Jeff Gunter’s response was similar. They were both sent to a detention center in Louisiana, where they now await deportation.
Being a north country native, Mr. Homan said he is tuned in to what happens along the Canadian border.
Woodward says businesses who knowingly hire undocumented should be called to task and law enforcement should go after the more than 50 percent of immigrants who came to the US on legal visas but stayed after they expired. Others, who promote the hashtags #NotMyPresident and #NotMySystem, are skeptical, see Congress as Trump’s rubber stamp and point out the systematic racism against immigrants enshrined in the government at all levels.
“I would just ask you to think about these families”, Immigration Attorney Nathan Elmore said.
“If you’re going to go through this whole process and a federal judge makes a decision, that decision needs to be executed, or there’s no integrity in the system”, he said. “I hate getting blown around by the wind”.

“Support them, and let them know that here, where I stand, we stand for justice”, Thompson said. We do not intend to change that practice.
Wilson said he’s “not inclined to be an obstructionist with the feds”. But it he and Mayor Rahm Emanuel will likely continue to face pressure to increase arrests and stops (Trump has also called for the return of stop-and-frisk, specifically to Chicago.) If they were to relent, it could have the tangential effect of exposing undocumented immigrants-sanctuary city or no-to federal agents, namely due to Trump’s revival of the Secure Communities deportation program. But it’s had a chilling effect on those who have been here for years raising their families and building a life, said Kathleen Kersh, an immigration attorney with Advocates for Basic Legal Equality. “If that’s what you want to do, go sign on with (Immigration and Customs Enforcement)”. ICE says those rules are still in place. City officials have already been warned by Trump’s administration that “sanctuary cities” like NY, will be penalized with a cut in their federal funding. Resources will be scarce, but it’s also a matter of political will, she said.
The news of tougher immigration enforcement was applauded by those who want more border protections and increased vetting of immigrants entering the country.
The Press of Atlantic City obtained documents showing that the Cape May County Sheriff’s Office has requested to enroll in a program so its officers can enforce immigration laws in that jurisdiction.
“It’s not the type of thing that has to be presented to the freeholder board”, he said. That program is not now active, Immigration and Customs Enforcement spokesperson Bryan Cox said.
But given the size of the Garfield County jail, it’s probably not worth the investment, the sheriff said.
