Hundreds gather in Elizabeth to denounce Trump’s immigration raids

“To improve jobs and wages for Americans, to strengthen our nations security, and to restore respect for our laws”, says Trump. “We will never stop fighting for justice”.

Trump himself indicated there may be something of a softening towards undocumented migrants living in the USA during his first ever joint session address to Congress.

Deporting undocumented immigrants who have committed no serious crimes and who have been working productively in this country to take care of their families and contributing to the economy not only by their labor, but also by their taxes (yes, undocumented immigrants do pay taxes, such as sales taxes) is cruel and inhumane. According to the Department of Homeland Security, between the years of 2010 and 2014, only 121 people were charged with murder after having been previously held by immigration officials.

The private detention center, run by the Corrections Corporation of America, can profit from Trump’s deportations machine by housing hundreds of immigrants facing deportation from around the region.

In his speech before Congress Tuesday, Trump said the time may be ripe for immigration reform, and suggested that the country should have a “merit-based immigration system”, which would prioritize the admission of immigrants with specific skills.

That’s a big lie.

Trump has repeatedly made claims related to crime committed by immigrants that he has used as a pretext for his restrictive immigration policies. Rather than beginning to view immigrants as individuals, we would be continuing to view them as a collective whole, vilifying the group and labeling the issue as an “us versus them” situation. As a result, innocent people are fearful.

Morales said the move is created to spread fear, and only makes compromise more elusive. Democrats must say outright that illegal immigration is not OK. They are now as much a part of prosecutors’ offices as investigators and lawyers. “By removing criminals from our community we are keeping Collier County safe”. I’m sure there was more than a little sarcasm there, but in her nine-minute interview, most of it focused on immigration, she never offered even a hint of acknowledgement that perhaps immigrants don’t have sinister motivations for coming here.

ICE itself keeps public data on who it removed from the country during the Obama years. But it also includes lawful immigrants-even green card holders-who have been convicted of crimes that render them deportable. The victim in all likelihood has no idea of the perp’s immigration status. But that seemingly benign goal drew the only audible protests during Trump’s speech Tuesday night before Congress, and the plan to establish the office, say critics, is meant to demonize immigrants by painting them as predators bent on victimizing Americans.

Even if the federal government will lack the resources to actually deport everyone targeted under the new policies, the consequences to families, businesses and communities here in Oklahoma and across the nation will be real and far-reaching.

Apparently Trump’s administration isn’t really concerned with who has a criminal record and who doesn’t.

His Jan. 25 executive order creating the office called for U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement to “provide proactive, timely, adequate, and professional services” to victims and family members of crimes committed by any aliens eligible for deportation.

Her advice to reporters on the story: “Remind folks that the immigration system is a civil system, not a criminal system”.

Trump instructed Homeland Security to develop the office in his January 25 executive order on interior security. “So, like, jaywalking, have you ever driven without your wallet because you left your wallet at home?”
