New York Giants make a splash, sign WR Brandon Marshall

After asking for a release from the New York Jets, Marshall will still play home games at MetLife Stadium next season as a member of the New York Giants.

There’s no guaranteeing that Jerry Reese and the New York Giants will get something done, nor that Brandon Marshall has legitimate interest, but this is an intriguing development in free agency.

Brandon Marshall won’t have to move very far for his next team.

“I have a wealth of experience, good and bad, and I think that our younger guys can pull from that organically”, Marshall said during a teleconference on Wednesday after signing a two-year, million contract with the Giants. “It probably was the least money”.

The soon-to-be 33-year-old wideout is coming off of what for him is a down season as he caught 59 passes for 788 yards and three scores.

The Jets acquired Marshall in 2015 from the Bears, costing them only a fifth-round pick. Even when the team spun out of control in a 5-11 season in 2016, Marshall remained a consistent leader and was most definitely not a problem player. He registered a 6.8 receiving OTD (16th-highest in the NFL) but scored only three touchdowns. When he’s at his best, Marshall is more than capable of being a No.1 wide receiver.

Going to the Giants benefits them as a team more than it does for Marshall’s fantasy outlook. Despite their successes, the Giants could have used Marshall.

The move benefits Marshall, who gets to stay in NY and he joins a potentially deadly trio of receivers along with Odell Beckham and Sterling Shepard. They also have a promising second-year receiver in Sterling Sheppard, who put together a respectable rookie campaign recording 65 receptions for 683 receiving yards and eight touchdowns.

It’s important to keep things like this in mind because Marshall has been among the most targeted wide receivers in football, while his fantasy point per target production has gone down.

The fundamental question you must ask yourself about Brandon Marshall has nothing to do with his ability. Instead, he was looking for a team that could compete for a Super Bowl title. Superstars like Adrian Peterson and Jamaal Charles are scheduled to hit the open market, as are solid running backs like Eddie Lacy, LeGarrette Blount and Latavius Murray.

The NFL’s legal free agency tampering period might get off to a bang for the New York Giants.
