Manipur exit polls: A close fight between the Congress and the BJP

March 09 12:07 2017

The BJP would need to win 202 seats to secure a majority in the 403-seat assembly in Uttar Pradesh, where voting ended on Wednesday nearly a month after the first of seven voting phases kicked off.

– Phase IV (53 seats): BJP may get 27-33 seats, followed by SP with 16-22 seats. The poll has a margin of error of +/- 3 percent. The Samajwadi-Congress could win 88-112 seats and the BSP 28-42 seats.

While AAP’s fate depends largely on politically significent Malwa region, the Congress appears to have done better in the remaining two regions – Doaba and Majha. CVoter predicts AAP winning between 59 and 67 seats in the 117-strong Assembly. AAP can win a maximum of four seats.

The India Today-My Axis India predicts a big win for the BJP in Uttarakhand. The SAD-BJP alliance is expected to languish between 4 and 7 seats.

The India TV-C Voter poll also showed BJP just ahead at 155-167 seats, while the SP-Congress alliance was placed second at 135-147. VMR poll shows the BJP getting between 190 to 210 seats, the upper end of which will get it past the half-way mark.

The Congress-SP alliance seems to have not made any gains for SP, and it only benefited Congress. Akhilesh could’ve formed govt alone, say analysts. If this prediction comes true, then BJP is likely to form the government considering the others include the Naga Peoples’ Front, the ruling party in Nagaland, and a BJP ally. And AAP is projected to have won 6 seats. However, when the results were announced, all pollsters were dumbfounded after the Grand Alliance managed to upstage the BJP. It’s expected to be down to 2 seats from 19 in 2012.

News 24-Today’s Chanakya predicted 53 seats for the BJP and 15 for the Congress. They claim that AAP has managed to eat into Congress’ vote share which should certainly be a cause of concern for the party high command in Delhi.

Captain Amarinder Singh: Congress has done extremely well in the Punjab polls because of its cool and level-headed campaigning by its lodestar Captain Amarinder Singh.
