Cleveland will not commit to Osweiler in this deal, rather it was more important to them to capture a second-rounder while they had the chance. And Moneyball is the culprit.
The Cleveland Browns continued shocking the world and winning the National Football League offseason with a trade no one saw coming. In this case, the comparison is very valid. In order to entice the Browns to make the deal, the Texans included a second-round draft pick to sweeten the deal. They also have two, first-round picks this year.
The Browns reportedly acquired a 2018 second-round pick and Brock Osweiler from Houston on Thursday in a salary-dump move by the Texans.
And on America’s team, the quarterback drama continues. In addition, the Browns have the cap space available to take on Osweiler’s contract. Griffin III has had many highlight plays in his career, however, has unfortunately also suffered many injuries that have held him back so far in the NFL.
They might either trade or release Osweiler, because the trade was all about getting the pick and not about the quarterback.
Osweiler earned the four-year contract after stepping in for future Pro Football Hall of Fame quarterback Peyton Manning for part of the 2015 season, one that ended with the Broncos beating the Carolina Panthers in Super Bowl 50.
The issue, though, went a little deeper than that. So it’s not surprising to hear the Browns don’t view him as a player they’d like to bring on board for the 2017 season. If the Texans cut him? And if they do make a trade, it likely will be for much less than the $16 million in guaranteed salary he is set to earn this year.
If John Elway truly does want Tony Romo, I do not see him losing out to the Texans two offseasons in a row. Adding Romo would open up the running game, since teams wouldn’t be able to focus on shutting down Miller. The Browns, to their credit, saw opportunity. It was about taking advantage of an inefficiency elsewhere and leveraging an asset from it.
The Browns need a quarterback.
“I like Savage”, said Collin Beeston.
Whether or not Bill Belichick was ever going to trade Jimmy Garoppolo remains a point of debate. They simply created more opportunity for themselves-this time in 2018. So, in that sense, they should not be ruled out of any potential Garoppolo trade, if one is to take place.
