An early look at next week’s winter storm

Most of the snow showers should end by mid to late morning depending on where you live because the storm system will be clearing west to east. In addition, snow/ice accumulation could be possible on any untreated roadways and could cause travel issues.

York, Lancaster and Pottsville may see 12 inches, and to the northeast, 13 inches is expected to fall in Bloomsburg and 14 in Laporte. The high Saturday will be in the 30s, but the wind will make it feel like the 20s and still feel like freezing temperatures Sunday.

Many of us along and north I-80 will be under a Winter Storm Watch beginning on 7 PM Sunday through 7 PM Monday. The current forecast calls for 3-5 inches across the Island.

There are several different scenarios that show the rain-snow line in different places by early Tuesday morning, which will impact how much snow will fall.

“Expect temperatures to drop on the order of 15 to 30 degrees compared to readings observed on Wednesday and Thursday with the passage of an arctic front”.

“It’s going to be a chilly, raw, winter kind of day Saturday”, Jackson said. Light to moderate snow continues through the mid-morning hours, about 9 or 10 a.m.

By Saturday evening, forecasted precipitation will be primarily snow, with a possibility of sleet mixing in, as well.

Gaines said the best advice he can offer is for people to use the weekend to prepare for a strong storm to begin sometime Monday night.

He said that because the snowfall on Saturday is not expected to be heavy, accumulation on roads will be minimal.

In the 132 years of weather records in this area, March has seen 25 snowfalls of two or more inches.
