Southwest Airlines also warned of disruptions to its flights in the Northeast and parts of the Midwest. She cautioned travelers to check their flight status prior to leaving for the airport.
The lake effect snow will develop Monday evening and continue overnight into Tuesday, likely peaking in intensity after midnight through mid to late morning.
RIC canceled 60 flights for Tuesday, approximately 40 percent of the flights scheduled, mostly to or from the Northeast. Flights to or from Chicago, Washington, D.C., Boston, New York City, Detroit, Fort Lauderdale, Newark, Toronto and Philadelphia were among those canceled. That flight, along with more than a thousand other arrivals and departures at Philadelphia International Airport, has been cancelled.
The airport, which straddles the border of Essex and Union counties, is in an eight-county area in New Jersey which will be under a blizzard warning beginning at midnight Tuesday.
As of 3 p.m. the Greater Orlando Aviation Authority reported more than 54 flight delays and 11 cancellations. Forty-three departing flights were canceled and over 80 delayed.
Many airlines are waiving ticket change and re-booking fees.
Atlanta-based Delta said snow and high winds are expected to disrupt operations. “If you have any kind of flexibility in your schedule, take advantage of these travel waivers because air travel is going to be very challenging on Tuesday”, said airport spokesperson Diane Gerace. FlightAware reports that about 1,330 flights have already been cancelled for tomorrow, and that number rises on every refresh.
