This Is Us creator Dan Fogelman told Variety he always meant to show viewers the dark side of the Pearsons’ marriage.
President of NBC Entertainment released a statement in January saying, “We all got our wish that this is a hit show, “This Is Us is as good as anything we’ve ever had, we’re thrilled to renew it for two seasons and there’s no doubt it will have a long life on NBC”.
In fact, the episode ended with Jack and Rebecca (Mandy Moore) in a blowout fight. I think the opposite.
Jack then launched into one of his unbelievable speeches, saying, “You know, I was supposed to have another date the night that we met”. But we can relate to the daily struggle of trying to communicate with your wife, trying to communicate with a father you never knew, with battling weight, with battling insecurity when you’re in the spotlight of a spotlight job. “You just have to appreciate life and move positively through life”.
Ventimiglia simiarly spoke to USA Today about Jack’s fate. Last week’s episode made it seem like Jack dies in a vehicle crash and that Kate somehow feels responsible for Jack’s death. It feels real. There’s nothing manipulative about it.
The flashbacks work wonderfully well in showing how Jack and Rebecca turned it around for each other, meeting at the right time on the right night and going on to have the family that America fell in love with hook, line and sinker. The show focuses on the future of Randall (Sterling K. Brown), Kate (Chrissy Metz) and Kevin (Justin Hartley). “It’s rare when you have such a talented group of performers assembled with such wonderful material”, he says. We wanted to have an idea of how the scene was going to ebb and flow.
Ventimiglia – whose facial hair has been a useful guide to Us’s time jumps – and Moore have acted with infant, child and teen versions of the Pearson kids. That’s something I very much appreciate about everyone in the cast, about Mandy, they are all such talented, strong people that at times I lead, at times I follow.
“Because of what and how it went down, I would say that it’s…” “I have nieces and nephews I care about. And our love story – I know it may not feel like it right now, baby, but I promise it’s just gettin’ started”. “That’s the way I approach working with these kids”.
Fan theories suggest that Jack might have chose to follow Rebecca after drinking too much, which would have resulted in a auto accident. With plenty of liquid courage in him, Jack finally goes searching for Rebecca, but finds Ben instead, who lets slip that something happened. Rebecca is unsettled and Jack has a certainty. “This character is so important to the show because he’s different”.
A dejected young Rebecca received a rejection letter from a record label, and then she picked up the phone to ask someone to set her up on a date. But co-star Mandy Moore says there will be more to the Pearson part of the show, calling the death a “monumental event for the family”.
Leading into the finale, the biggest question was if the audience would learn how Jack died.
Finally, before he walks out, he tells her why he loves her: because she’s an awesome mother; she’s still the most attractive girl in the room; she laughs with her entire face; she dances amusing and not sexy, which is sexy; and he loves that she’s still the same woman who blew off a blind date because she had to sing.
As the episode goes on, we see that Jack wasn’t the blind date, but rather a guy named Ethan shows up.
