USA Women’s National Hockey Team Boycotting Championships

March 16 13:19 2017

A contingent of the top USA women’s hockey players announced Wednesday they will boycott the upcoming world championships unless national officials boost financial support for their program. “The great news for USA Hockey is that we have a very deep player pool with a lot of talented players that can populate the ice to play on our women’s national team“.

According to The Huffington Post, members of the team announced its boycott Wednesday, after failed attempts to reach an agreement with USA Hockey, American hockey’s governing body. “But life is filled with many challenges and we will, again, make efforts to get to a good place with the players that we named to the women’s national team and have them participate”. Eastern Time Thursday for players to decide if they meant to play. “So we said ‘Let’s look into it and fight for women in the program”.

Duggans and Langel say that’s misleading.

Poulin added: “Waking up this morning, it was kind of surprising, but after today, we have to focus on ourselves and moving forward”. Another chunk of cash would come from the United States Olympic Committee, and only when the Olympics are actually happening.

The women have proposed a dollar amount to USA Hockey, but they’re not disclosing it. But Bellamy says there’s a bottleneck that keeps women from pursuing the sport professionally.

She plays with passion and conviction, is focused and diligent in her preparation, and is fiercely proud of who she represents.

“It’s 2017, and the fact that women in this country and are still fighting outside of sports and hockey for equitable support and treatment from their employers is unbelievable to me”.

The U.S. women’s hockey team is threatening to boycott the upcoming world championships in a struggle for fair wages. “Further, it covers only the Olympic period and does not cover each of the other three years during which a World Championship is played”.

A Longstreth/NFHCA Regional First Team All-American, CAA All-First Team, NCAA All-Tournament Team and CAA All-Tournament performer this past season, Lister finished the year with 21 points on 11 assists and five goals. “Those are what we’re in process of trying to resolve”.

The equal pay fight has arrived to hockey.

Since they announced the boycott, Twitter has been flooded with messages of support from former United States teams and even Canadian stars like Hayley Wickenheiser.

There are many reasons contributing to why female athletes are often paid less. If you need reminding, the 2014 men’s team failed to medal that year, while the women took home silver after a heartbreaking loss to Team Canada in of the best hockey games ever played. Men’s sports leagues have typically been around for longer, so have had more time to build up a fanbase.

But women’s players have had contracts only in Olympic years and are seeking a deal that covers them in off years.

“We’re asked to train and compete and perform full time”, Duggan said, “yet we’re not compensated for it”. “Proud of the US Women’s hockey team”, one fan tweeted. Is playing going to be more stress than we can handle?
