The network’s leading organizations, Americans for Prosperity and Freedom Partners, announced late Wednesday the creation of a special fund to support House members who vote against the health care bill. “This is a setback no two ways about it. Ryan said he’s “done everything he can” to gather votes but “at the end of the day, you can’t force people to vote”.
Meanwhile, Obama celebrated the anniversary of his landmark health care law, saying in a statement on Thursday that “America is stronger because of the Affordable Care Act”.
Mr Trump threw his full political weight into the negotiations with recalcitrant Republicans, mostly ultra-conservatives concerned the new plan was too similar to Obamacare and would cost the government too much.
House Republicans can only afford 22 no-votes from its own ranks for the bill to pass, but the Freedom Caucus said it has almost 30 no-votes under its belt.
“Today we’ve got a chance to do something different”, said Rep. Tom Cole (R-OK).
Earlier, Bannon had basically told Republican lawmakers they had no choice but to vote for the bill.
Conservatives felt the bill did not go far enough in easing restrictions on insurance companies and patients while moderates anxious they would lose votes among constituents who could afford coverage for the first time under Obamacare.
His health care bill to replace Obamacare is up for a vote in the House Friday. The roughly 30 members of the group (there is no official roster) have expressed disdain for the AHCA, which they see as “Obamacare lite” and not a full repeal of the landmark 2009 law.
‘Yes this does make tax reform more hard, ‘ said Ryan.
After the AHCA was pulled from consideration, Trump said he would wait for ObamaCare to fail, before striking a deal on a new healthcare reform plan with Democrats. But a number of last minute concessions on the measure geared to appease House conservatives has begun to push moderate Republicans away.
Mr Trump lashed out at Democrats in Congress after the bill was withdrawn, blaming the opposition party for not backing his legislation.
The bill’s failure brings an end to yet another awful week for Mr Trump.
Trump additionally tweeted his intention to take action on health care at the start of his presidency as far back as February 2016 when he wrote, “We will immediately repeal and replace ObamaCare – and nobody can do that like me”. As stated by Sean Spicer, Trump also agreed to repeal all tax increases set in the present health law, and add some additional restrictions to Medicaid payments for low-income people.
