United Airlines defended the gate agent’s decision in a series of tweets.
Turns out United has a policy and so does Delta that when family or friends are flying on a pass, there’s a dress code.
Airlines have surprisingly strict dress codes for people traveling on “buddy passes”, and astonishingly tone-deaf explanations. “We want people to be comfortable when they travel as long as it’s neat and in good taste for that environment”.
Ever since yoga trousers and leggings have replaced jeans and khakis as the pant style du jour, people have had all kinds of opinions about what’s appropriate dress and what crosses the line into too tight or revealing.
It all started when a Colorado woman at Denver International Airport tweeted that a gate agent for United Airlines was refusing to let “girls in leggings” get on a flight to Minneapolis.
The popularity of leggings among girls have made them a target for many school district dress code policies across the country, to the ire of many parents.
Many accused the airline of body-shamming.
After two adolescent girls were rejected during the boarding process on a United Airlines flight for wearing leggings, Delta delivered a serious burn.
Watts quickly gathered support from other Twitter users who were just as shocked as she.
American Airlines, for paying passengers, reserves the right to bar you if you are clothed in a manner that would “cause discomfort or offense to other passengers or are barefoot”.
United pointed out a rule in their Contract of Carriage, which indicates that a passenger can be refused if that person is “not properly clothed“.
United’s Guerin conceded that the airline could have done a better job of getting the facts out early.
‘If leggings aren’t allowed then what about shorts and dresses.
“@united Leggings are business attire for 10 year olds”.
United Airlines spent the day responding to various critics on Twitter and it’s official response remains the same as the time of posting. Later on, the model was informed by the company’s policy.
Model Chrissy Teigen weighed in: “I have flown united before with literally no trousers on. They wear yoga trousers all of the time when flying”, said Watts in an email from aboard her flight.
