Oakland mayor: Raiders fans “deserved better”

March 28 02:54 2017

Rivera said he planned to tailgate at games when the Raiders plan to play in Oakland the next two years but probably won’t go into the stadium and won’t give his support after the move in a reaction he believes will be common among the East Bay fans. They won’t play in their new Nevada home until 2020, and could be in Oakland for at least the next two years.

Davis acknowledged some fans in Oakland would be disappointed and even angry at the decision, but said frustration should be directed at him and not the team’s coaches or players. This is the fourth time now that the Raiders have changed their hometown, going from Oakland to Los Angeles and then back to Oakland, where they returned for the 1995 season.

Steelers president Art Rooney II, who is chairman of the league’s stadium committee, said the move to Las Vegas was necessitated by the inability of the Raiders to get a new stadium built in Oakland.

The Raiders would become the third National Football League team in the past year to move – the Los Angeles Rams relocated from St. Louis and the Chargers announced in January they will leave San Diego for L.A.

“We plan to play at the Coliseum in 2017 and 2018, and hope to stay there as the Oakland Raiders until the new stadium opens”.

The number 31-1 is what Oakland Raider fans would like to forget.

The move to Las Vegas now presents new challenges for the team because of the gambling and adult entertainment industries.

What they can’t control is community reaction in a place where devotion to the Raiders during their Oakland years – they spent 1982-94 in Los Angeles – has been admirable. Welcome to Las Vegas!

“I’ve had a license for a seventh brothel near Las Vegas for some time now, but I was waiting for the right time to launch another house of debauchery”, Hof said in a press release.

A few other fans showed up at the team’s facility in Alameda but there were no big protests. “The Raiders’ desire of a new stadium was largely predicated on the fact that it did not want to share a stadium with the A’s anymore”.

“My father used to say that the greatness of the Raiders was in its future”, Davis said, referring to Al Davis, from whom he inherited the team in 2011.

However, Davis secured the financing from Bank of America to keep the project moving forward and winning the support of league ownership. You may remember that Raider game – Oakland native Doug Martin ran for approximately a billion yards.

“It’s not just about the vote” said Vegas Raiders fan Marlon Rice. A letter from Goodell to Oakland Mayor Libby Schaaf reaffirmed that likelihood, and now, the Raiders exit from Oakland is a reality. Through their first 41 seasons, the Bucs have played in 49 different host cities (including Tampa) and in 68 different stadiums. For instance, the Buccaneers and their NFC South brethren played all the teams in the NFC West previous year, in the NFC East in 2015 and in the NFC North in 2014. In January, the Chargers moved from San Diego to L.A.

To be sure, Varvatakis said he wasn’t going to be an anti-Raider fan over the move.
