Principals at schools with large immigrant enrollments say students are genuinely fearful, but there are very few instances of children no longer coming to school. Menendez said at a Capitol Hill news conference.

Law enforcement agents investigate the scene of a shooting in Chicago on Monday, March 27, 2017.

Cristóbal Alex, president of the New York-based Latino Victory Fund, said the announcement was an attempt by Sessions and President Donald Trump to distract the public from the GOP’s failure to pass the American Healthcare Act (AHCA) on Friday.

“We believe that regardless of the circumstances, when a civilian is shot, the community needs to know why”, said Juan Cruz, an organizer with Communities United. He recently testified before a House Subcommittee on Immigration in Washington, D.C., and mentioned DuBois’ Facebook post. Bernard spoke directly to the local sheriff, saying the official had an obligation to serve the people in his jurisdiction rather than complying with Trump’s immigration agenda. “Aliens overran our border, and credible fear and asylum claims increased tenfold”, Representative Jim Sensenbrenner, a Wisconsin Republican, said in his opening statement.

Immigration and Customs Enforcement weighs many factors when deciding where to make an arrest, including whether authorities have a home or work address for the person they are seeking and what is safest for officers and community, said Virginia Kice, an agency spokeswoman.

“We’re going to have to talk to Chicago Police Department to find out if this was a coordinated effort, because if it was in any way, that raises concerns about us as a sanctuary city”, said Alderman Gilbert Villegas, a city official. The six-page request seeks communications between the agency’s OR staff with words OR phrases that may relate to immigration issues and its policies, memoranda, rules and directives.

“Yeah I’m upset because I don’t feel this is right”, said Erica Savillon.

A Justice Department spokesman declined to comment on the letter. “Your city will protect you”.

It is not clear whether ICE coordinated the raid with local law enforcement.

In the law that Sessions references, 1373, really all that language says is that state, local, and federal agencies can not prevent each other from getting information about somebody’s immigration status. Most often, these are immigrants who were charged with or convicted of minor crimes.

“This fear not only harms the undocumented workers, it harms the documented workers we rely on so heavily”, said Shriner, adding that the majority of permanent and part-time coffee workers have legal status.
