Because Trump faces unified opposition by Democratic lawmakers, he can not afford to lose many Republicans as he tries to get his legislative agenda through Congress, including health care, tax cuts and infrastructure spending. It was a message echoed by Trump administration officials the weekend after the health care failure and repeated Thursday by Ryan, multiple people involved say.
Thursday’s tweet was the second time Trump accused them of helping Democrats. “On this issue, the president should remember, the only think the Freedom Caucus wanted is to bring down the premiums in the end”.
Rep. Dave Brat, R-7th, whose district includes Richmond suburbs, said Trump may not understand that most members of the Freedom Caucus want to repeal the law but they weren’t going to replace it with a bill that didn’t lower health care costs and had just 17 percent support of the American people in polls.
“If you think this is complicated and controversial, wait until we get into tax reform“, Rep. Mario Diaz-Balart, R-Florida, said of the health care process.
“What I am anxious about is. that if we don’t do this then he will just go work with Democrats to try and change Obamacare – that’s hardly a conservative thing”, Ryan said. “Especially in a primary”.
More than a dozen leaders of the conservative movement were in attendance. Tim Phillips, the president of Americans for Prosperity, reiterated their support for those lawmakers in an interview Thursday.
The Democrats’ gesture to Trump after Republicans failed to rally behind him has Ryan anxious that the president will lean towards the other side of the aisle. “We don’t have anything to add at this time”, according to Sarah Huckabee Sanders, White House principal deputy press secretary.
Should Trump seek candidates to run against caucus members in the 2018 primary, he would risk thrusting the GOP into a civil war.
“It didn’t take long for the swamp to drain @realDonaldTrump”, tweeted Justin Amash.
Thursday’s results discovered Trump’s approval rating has fallen 3 points since PPP’s survey a little more than two weeks ago, when 43 percent approved of the president. “Nearly everyone succumbs to the D.C. Establishment”, the Michigan Republican, tweeted. “There are members who belong to no faction that also hated this bill”. “We’re trying to help you succeed”.
In an address before the U.S. House Intelligence Committee March 20, Comey formally announced the investigation, which he said has been ongoing since July.
“We made a promise to voters that we would repeal and replace #Obamacare”, Meadows wrote on his Facebook page Wednesday.
A senior House Republican aide distanced Ryan from Trump’s strategy of upbraiding conservatives. The question, though, is whether he will stay angry enough with these conservatives to keep the pressure on them for the next year and a half, ahead of the midterm elections.
Additionally, Rep. Mark Sanford of SC, a Freedom Caucus member, said Mr. Trump threatened to support a primary challenger to run against him in next year’s elections, according to Reid.
Passing a budget for next year could also prove challenging.
The discord following the healthcare debacle was not limited to tensions between Trump and the Freedom Caucus.
But the Freedom Caucus is a group that prides itself on maintaining ideological purity. Of course, this comes after he failed to get Republicans on board with his Obamacare replacement – and after he blamed Democrats for stalling his agenda.
