But by Thursday, Ryan told reporters he shares President Trump’s frustration with Freedom Caucus conservatives who say the bill advanced by Republican leaders failed to fully repeal Obamacare and did nothing to lower premiums.
“We respectfully request that you abandon your efforts to repeal the Affordable Care Act (ACA) and undermine the USA healthcare system so that we can work together to improve the law and lower the cost of healthcare for all Americans”, the letter said.
DOMENICO MONTANARO, BYLINE: Hey there, Ari. Moderates, who disliked how the bill rolled back Medicaid expansion, and Trump heaped blame on House conservatives for refusing to support the bill.
“This is a can-do president, who’s a business guy, who wants to get things done, and I know that he wants to get things done with a Republican Congress”, Ryan told CBS.
On Thursday evening, Trump tagged Republican congressmen Mark Meadows of North Carolina, Jim Jordan of OH and Raul Labrador of Idaho, contending that if they would “get on board we would have both great health care, massive tax cuts and reform”. That’s presented Republicans like Paul Ryan and Mitch McConnell with a potential problem here.
Ryan was asked about Trump’s tweet at a press conference Thursday.
Presidents change and lawmakers come and go, but The Times is always here, and FREE online. “We are not now negotiating with the Freedom Caucus. Please work with them”, pleaded another Trump supporter. For example, he won them by an average of 26 points.
It goes without saying that “ad hoc” group or not, the Tuesday Group is at war with conservatives over just about everything. Trump bemoaned the fact that when it came time to vote on the bill, which had been negotiated exclusively by the House Republicans and the administration, with no input sought or accepted from the other side of the aisle.
“The House Freedom Caucus, for the past several weeks, have been the grown-ups in the room”, said Michael Needham, chief executive of Heritage Action.
Rep. Jim Himes, D-Conn., chairs the New Democrat Coalition, a faction of about four dozen business-friendly Democrats that, in theory, stand ready to work with the president on certain agenda items, like infrastructure spending.
SHAPIRO: How likely is that?
After last week’s failure on health care, GOP leaders and the White House appear wary of a battle with Democrats like Senate Minority Leader Charles Schumer of NY that could leave divided Republicans saddled with the blame for a government shutdown.
The last thing President Donald Trump needs on his 100th day in office is a government shutdown. “That’s such an easy one”. “They are going to say, Why?'”
“I don’t think anyone would quarrel with the idea that they were largely position votes”, Meehan continued.
“I don’t know where he thinks he’s going to get his friends on those issues”.
It is unclear whether Ryan and other Republican House leaders are willing to make that effort. But his inability to push through the effort to repeal and replace Obamacare calls into questions his own ability to close deals with the Republican-controlled Congress to make America great again. I completely understand why the president is upset and frustrated after spending his political capital dealing with the concerns of the Freedom Caucus.
MONTANARO: Well, obviously something has to give.
Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer of NY and other Senate Democrats warned Republicans in a letter earlier this month that any “poison pill riders such as those that roll back protections for our veterans, environment, consumers and workers” would result in a “Republican shutdown”.
SHAPIRO: NPR’s Domenico Montanaro, thanks.
