CT head coach Geno Auriemma reacts to his teams poor start against Mississippi State in the first half of an NCAA college basketball game in the semifinals of the women’s Final Four in Dallas on Friday, March 31, 2017.

SC head coach Dawn Stanley answers a question during a news conference at the women’s Final Four college basketball tournament, Saturday, April 1, 2017, in Dallas. “There is no reason to be scared. Sometimes you aren’t ready and sometimes things happen in a game that you can’t deal with”.

Mississippi State center Teaira McCowan (15) celebrates the team’s win over CT in an NCAA college basketball game in the semifinals of the women’s Final Four, Saturday, April 1, 2017, in Dallas. “It’s not going to happen to us”. Bulldogs coach Vic Schaefer was refreshingly honest in his postgame comments Friday night, using words like redemption, opportunity and desire, words that speak to some of the strongest motivations there are in sports.

And on cue, the Huskies reeled in the Bulldogs during the first four minutes of the third quarter, taking their first lead at 40-39 on Collier’s short bank shot with 6:15 left in the period.

Geno Auriemma and the UConn Huskies have been on an unprecedented Final Four run, making it there 10 straight years. “It is going to be tougher because you do not change up anything around this time, but at the same time something is going to have to change because they know you that well”.

There just weren’t enough of them.

When Mississippi State’s Teaira McCowan walks into a room, you notice two things.

But Connecticut closed the gap quickly.

The Huskies scored seven straight points, but Vivians hit a 3-pointer that gave Mississippi State a 60-59 lead with 1:14 remaining. Napheesa Collier would tied the game at 60 with a free-throw shot with 28 seconds left.

The engine that makes Mississippi State go is William, the slayer of Baylor (41 points) and UConn. Junior Alisha Gray, who Staley calls the team’s “silent assassin”, led the comeback against Stanford with 18 points. When they played Maryland, reporters watched as Katie Lou Samuelson threw up in a trash can on the sidelines, sick from a stomach flu, before leading her team past a scrappy Terps team in the second half.

“They’ve owned the whole month of March, they weren’t just along for the ride”, Auriemma said. They had a glorious record of consecutive victories over the major and minor opponents before and after the winning streak that started in 2014 and now came to a sad ending in 2017. “We just moved forward”. The Huskies are 0-6 in overtime games since 2004. “She’s had really good games in the past, but she’s put it all together now”.

It was a much different story Friday as Mississippi State’s Vic Schaefer, who earned the “secretary of defense” nickname when he was an assistant coach at Texas A&M put together a game plan that the scrappy Bulldogs followed almost perfectly for much of the first half.

In the first game of the night, South Carolina, a 1-seed, pulled away in the fourth quarter to avoid an upset against Stanford, a 2-seed, 62-53.

Well, that is why they play the game. After spending a weekend at Madison Square Garden watching the likes of National Football League quarterback Aaron Rodgers root on his home state Wisconsin Badgers or musician/actor Darius Rucker celebrate with his beloved South Carolina Gamecocks, the pure joy and celebration of Cowboys’ QB Dak Prescott might be my favorite famous fan of all. “This is a very special team”, said Wilson, who had 13 points and 19 rebounds. William said she dedicated her performance to her father, honoring the legacy of the way he pushed and molded her. But there was only so much an undefeated squad riding an all-time streak could be looked over. “Sometimes, it just clicks – all that we’ve been telling her throughout the year”.

“I don’t have to play them 100 times“. “We knew we were in good shape”.

But we also want to help you out.

In the final game of the year for women’s college basketball the South Carolina Gamecocks and Mississippi State Bulldogs will faceoff for the national championship. On Sunday, the Lady Bulldogs will attempt to add their name to history against SEC rival SC.
