WWE: The Undertaker retires from wrestling after heavy defeat to Roman Reigns

Had anyone other than Mark Callaway played The Undertaker, then the gimmick would have died in the 1990s, which probably makes The Undertaker the greatest professional wrestling character in the history of sports entertainment.

A win against the Undertaker at the annual pro wrestling gala has regularly been promoted by the company, and embraced by fans, as equal to or more prestigious than winning the world championship.
