A look at the charges against former Alabama governor

On Monday, Robert Bentley, 74, resigned from his role as Alabama’s governor after an ethics report concluded he used state resources to hide an affair with his adviser, Rebekah Caldwell Mason.

Robert Bentley, 74, pleaded guilty in an agreement with prosecutors on Monday to two misdemeanor campaign violations and is barred from seeking public office again. He was booked into the county jail, according to CNN.

The second woman ever to hold the post behind Lurleen Wallace, Ivey took office shortly after 6 p.m. Monday.

Why did he resign?

Bentley had denied a physical relationship with the senior political adviser, Rebekah Caldwell Mason, and had maintained at a Friday press conference that he did not misuse state resources and did not do anything illegal.

Past year recordings surfaced of him making sexually-charged comments to his political advisory. Here are a few of the most damning lines from the recording, both uttered by Bentley.

“It’s really time for us to look ahead and start moving forward on more pressing matters”, Republican Sen. During the conversation, Bentley was heard professing his love for his former aide and talked about feeling her breasts. I need you. I want you.

“I can no longer allow my family, my dear friends, my dedicated staff and Cabinet, to be subjected to the consequences that my past actions have brought upon them”, Bentley said during a short address at the state capitol. “I know every time we asked him for something, he answered the call”.

The current total is down from six past year and well shy of the all-time high of nine, which was achieved in 2004 and again in 2007.

What about those texts? Unusual discouraged state lawmakers from pursuing impeachment against Bentley because, as the former state attorney general, he said his office would oversee the matter.

But the real kicker is one “I love you Rebekah” – which Bentley accidentally sent to Dianne. “I certainly thought that the decision might be later in the week, but it did move fast and I’ve got a good, wonderful staff in the Lt. Governor’s office and so we got busy”.

There are a variety of figures and officials directly tied to Bentley’s sex and ethics scandal who will face additional scrutiny going forward, and that includes Sen.

“It is a sad state of affairs that the leadership of all three branches of our state government has – in only one year’s time – either been removed from office, or resigned because they were going to be removed from office for corruption”, Ford said in a statement.

But in March, things went south, fast.

Bentley is the third of the last six Alabama governors to run afoul of the law while in office.

Robert Bentley is only the latest high-ranking state politician caught up in controversy in recent years.

How about the legal troubles?

With much of his six-year sentence delayed while Siegelman appealed, he finally was freed from prison in February.
