Bayern Munich goalkeeper Manuel Neuer may be sidelined for the rest of the season after fracturing his left foot during the 4-2 loss at Real Madrid in Tuesday’s Champions League quarter-final second leg.
Real Madrid got the better of Bayern Munich (6-3) in aggregate but the referee blew it up for the Germans who nearly had the game in their grasp in the second half.
Bayern were not done as less than a minute later they would answer right back with Thomas Muller and Robert Lewandowski combining to pressure Sergio Ramos into an ill advised back pass that Keylor Navas clearly was not ready for and it slipped in for an own goal.
Ronaldo equalised in the 76th minute when a flawless lofted pass from Casemiro found him.
The Foxes were dominant after Vardy’s goal and came close to getting a second to set up a grandstand finish, but the defending Premier League champions’ Champions League fairy tale is at an end.
Meanwhile, Leicester City’s dream of another fairytale run to a trophy were ended by Atletico Madrid as they suffered a narrow 2-1 aggregate defeat.
Anticipation was high when two of Europe’s biggest and most successful clubs were drawn together – and an enthralling tie did not disappoint.
But the hosts didn’t escape moments later when referee Viktor Kassai pointed to the spot as Robben went down under a challenge from Casemiro.
Bayern played a man down from the 84th minute after Arturo Vidal picked up his second yellow card of the night for a foul on Asensio.
The La Liga side thought they had the win in the bag after Cristiano Ronaldo’s header in the 76th minute made it 1-1 – meaning they were 3-2 up on aggregate.
Bayern coach Carlo Ancelotti agreed with Vidal and said in his media conference that the referees needed video help.
Also, two of Ronaldo’s goals appeared to be offside in extra time at the Santiago Bernabeu.
For long periods, Madrid were edgy defensively and uncertain going forward – with Ronaldo guilty of wasting a number of chances in normal time.
Zidane was full of praise for Ronaldo, who was whistled by his home fans on his way to becoming the first player to reach 100 goals in the Champions League.
“When [referees] embarrass you like that, it’s really hard to take”.
Needing to score at least twice to avoid exiting the competition, Bayern produced a strong start as former Real winger Arjen Robben fired into the side netting.
But Madrid eventually wrestled control of the tie thanks to their numerical advantage and the decisions of the officials.
Marco Asensio added a fourth to send the Spanish giants into their seventh consecutive UCL semi-final.
