Cleveland Browns: 2017 NFL Draft Quarterback Preview

April 21 13:29 2017

“If we traded down this year”, Cleveland’s executive VP of football operations Sashi Brown said Wednesday during the team’s pre-draft news conference. Using the sixth overall pick on him seems like a stretch, but the Jets can use their 39th overall pick on him if he’s still available in the second round of the draft.

“We’ve narrowed it down”, Brown said, without letting on. “We feel really good about picking at (No. 1) and I’ll leave it at that”. On the chart, each pick has a number value connected to the pick. Kiper contends that in terms of the quarterback to get, Cleveland would probably go after Mitchell Trubisky, the standout from North Carolina.

“Positive young man, bright, very competitive, brings a lunchbox, blue-collar mentality to the position”, Brown said. Walterfootball.com notes that the Browns are nervous that either the Jets or the Buffalo Bills could mess up their plans at quarterback, which is why Cleveland is looking to trade up in the first round.

Could the Browns make a draft trade to get UNC QB Mitch Trubisky?

“No”, was all he said.

“There will be a lot of good Cleveland Browns players coming off the board on Thursday and Friday night”. His presence on the roster won’t preclude the Browns from drafting a quarterback but gives them insurance if they aren’t able to land the one they want. But the likeliest scenario is that the Browns stick with Garrett, leaving the next 31 picks in the draft open for business. Every team misses. We are not going to be different in that regard. Because the package San Francisco could get for moving the No. 2 pick to trade down would be presumably more valuable for team targeting a quarterback. I have one in particular in mind. The losing – and criticism about his play – took a toll. Philadelphia actually hosted the first NFL Draft back in 1936, and thanks to a trade made with the Minnesota Vikings prior to last season, they will actually have a selection in the first round.

We assume it’s Trubisky anyway – he’s generally regarded as the top quarterback option in this draft, is an OH native and is someone who is easy to see operating a Hue Jackson offense and helping revive the Browns. He said that the organization as a whole was “impressed by him”.

After spending time covering the NFL Combine, talking to many people that cover teams around the league, work in the league or work for players, I try to work through the smoke for nuggets of truth.
