Cristiano Ronaldo reaches milestone but says Champions League tie remains open

It was a monumental goal as it not only gave Real Madrid the lead for good but it was also the 100th goal for the Portuguese superstar across all European competitions. It was Madrid’s Taliman Cristiano Ronaldo again to the rescue.

Ronaldo has scored 97 of his European goals in the UCL, with another in the qualifiers and two in the European Super Cup. To be able to reach this mark is an honour and against a team like Bayern it is better still.

“I’m very happy. I want to thank Real Madrid for the opportunity to build a wonderful career at this club, and to my teammates as well”.

Bale suffered a calf injury during Real’s 2-1 win over Bayern in the first leg of their quarter-final tie last week and was forced to limp out of the action.

Before scoring his first goal of the night, Ronaldo had gone 659 minutes without scoring in Europe, but he insisted he was unaware of any doubters.

Bayern are just W6-D3-L7 in Champions League away games since 2014/15 and only W1-D3-L3 in knockout games, with that sole victory coming over Arsenal so we don’t think they’ll be able to get the result they need here.

In the first half of the game Bayern Munich were dominating and leading after Arturo Vidal scored the first goal in the 25th minute with a strong header. Bayern was dealt a blow with a half-hour to play when Javi Martínez was sent off with two yellow cards within three minutes for fouls on Ronaldo.

Madrid went behind a second time, before Morata equalised and Isco scored a late victor to keep Los Blancos in the clear.

“I am happy with the win, we reacted well to make a comeback”, Ronaldo said on the Madrid website.

Here, Press Association Sport takes a look at five things we learned from the Champions League quarter-final first leg. He said he found it hard to believe they could stage another remarkable comeback in the second leg as they did against Paris St Germain in the previous round.

The Real coach said his side were lucky to have only been a goal down at the break after Vidal’s penalty miss.

The game ended with a score of 2-1 in favor of Real Madrid.

“For us it is a very important game, we have to produce another big performance to try and win it”.
