Kenya’s Mary Keitany took 41 seconds off the women’s-only world record at the Virgin Money London Marathon, running 2:17:01 at the IAAF Gold Label Road Race on Sunday.
“I’ve had an incredible week and I’m so pleased to have smashed the course record”, she said. “Trying a new thing, a new challenge, is really good”.
“The girls are capable of a lot quicker than that (the qualifying time) and you’ll have to run a lot quicker than the time to qualify”.
The Scooby-Doo gang will be attempting to achieve a world record for the fastest marathon in a five person costume by carrying their own version of the legendary Mystery Machine van all the way around.
World records were being attempted by about 50 runners, including the fastest marathon in a sleeping bag and fastest marathon in Wellington boots.
“It was very fast pace and I tried to follow it”, Keitany said.
