We don’t need to change … too much — Samsung to investors

Samsung has posted its best quarterly profits since 2013 with strong memory chip and display sale, despite Sliding mobile sales. The fiasco cost Samsung billions of dollars.

Aiming to secure a stable supply of memory chips for its iPhones, Apple may invest billions of dollars to obtain a substantial stake in struggling Japanese conglomerate Toshiba’s chip business, ending almost two decades of being among Samsung’s largest RAM customers.

As that was at the time Samsung’s fastest selling smartphone, it means a new company record has been set. They also appear to break more easily, according to tests run by SquareTrade, a company that sells gadget-repair plans. Samsung is the world’s biggest semiconductor supplier, leading both the DRAM and NAND Flash markets. Through a press release, Samsung said its transition to a holding-company structure will only have limited impact on bolstering business competitiveness, and even adversely affect overall management, as such measures can disperse focus toward the company’s goals.

You’d imagine the R in the renamed Galaxy Note 7 R name would stand for “Refurbished”, but the ET News Korean publication says this stands for the word “Ripper”.

The Galaxy S8 started shipping in some countries last week, and some people who pre-ordered in South Korea complained about the display.

Samsung is still facing some acute headaches.

The Korean manufacturer expects its mobile business to experience a sales boost in the coming months. Consumer Reports will complete its testing of the Galaxy S8 and update its smartphone ratings in the next few weeks. Samsung said it was not a product quality issue and it will release a software update to allow subtle adjustments of screen colors.

The company also announced its second share buyback. That is where Samsung comes into play and after investing a plethora of funds in building production lines, the company will easily be able to complete Apple’s orders for the iPhone 8 and the 2018 smartphone family too.
