Chicago Bears make another trade, draft TE Shaheen

His potential to be a championship quarterback…is all we focused on in this move. I will admit that right now. “Lord knows they needed a quarterback, so they got one”.

That was clearly by design.

Off the phone, Marathe said to Lynch and Shanahan: “He [Pace] said, ‘I think you guys are going to be comfortable with what we do.’ So I don’t know what that is.”

“You can’t coach speed. These first two guys can really run”. So they “overpaid” by 196 points, which was also more than the Bears overpaid.

According to Rich Campbell in the Chicago Tribune, Glennon was not happy about the section after he first heard about it while at the Bears draft party at Soldier Field.

The Bears agreed to give up two third round picks and a fourth rounder to move up just one spot.

On one hand, this suggests that the Bears only decided last minute that Trubisky was worthwhile and, thus, informed Fox when they decided to make the trade. “But obviously they had done their research, was impressed with me at the combine and my workout, but I haven’t had a whole lot of contact with them so that makes it just so much more surprising”.

“We felt that he was just too talented of a player not to take a swing”, general manager Rick Spielman said, before making another trade in the third round to slide up nine spots and select Ohio State center Pat Elflein at No. 70 overall.

Both of those defensive players went on to have Hall of Fame careers in the league, something Trubisky hopes to do with the Bears.

A strong case could have been made for trading down to add picks rather than move up. Meanwhile, the 49ers selected defensive end Solomon Thomas (Stanford) with the No. 3 pick.

Still, the question begs asking – why pay Glennon so much money, even if it’s only for one year, to go then draft a quarterback who nearly certainly will be his replacement?

Mitchell Trubisky is the new kid on the block for the Chicago Bears and no one said that it would be a bed of roses. He insisted he couldn’t afford to wait. In exchange for the small commitment, the Bears are giving the quarterback $18.5 million in guaranteed money.

Fox reportedly was kept out of the loop on Pace’s plan to trade up and draft Trubisky until a couple hours before the draft.

In 1992, he sent the Falcons a first-round pick for their unwanted backup quarterback, a move which might have earned the long-time personnel man a ticket to Canton. Whether it was outside linebackers a year ago or wide receivers the year before. Running backs T.J. Logan and Elijah Hood were picked in the fifth and seventh rounds respectively, by the Arizona Cardinals and Oakland Raiders. But Pace jumped at the opportunity to take Trubisky.

Cook could come off the board early in round two as Green Bay and Seattle have the first two picks on day two.

Allgaier started on the outside and stayed side-by-side with Larson into the first turn.
