The final score was 121-102. Maybe that explains the reaction of Washington Wizards Coach Scott Brooks on Sunday night following his team’s smashing Game 4 performance.
This second-round National Basketball Association playoff series between the Boston Celtics and Washington Wizards has been ripe for overreaction.
If they are going to get back to winning ways again tonight, then the Celtics must not allow the Wizards to run rampant for such extended spells as they allowed in Game 3.
Washington’s backcourt of John Wall and Bradley Beal combined for 56 points-and 13 free throw attempts-to even the series at two games apiece. The series now shifts to the best of three and Boston has the homecourt, but that’s fine. The Celtics lost a game in which they were outscored 58-20 after building a mirage of hope with a 40-28 second-quarter lead. Yet it was their tone-setting start that turned the game. Boston’s struggles led to some complaints to the officials from star guard Isaiah Thomas.
The Celtics’ main area of improvement in Game 5 will have to be taking care of the ball.
The venue may have changed but the animosity, which has built over two seasons, remained.
The team said in a statement that Thomas had two other damaged teeth that required “extensive oral surgery to stabilize”. On top of that we converted, we’re one of the best teams in the league at converting off turnovers. Oubre was displeased with contact he made with Olynyk and charged at him following the play.
“I’m not surprised”, Oubre said after practice Saturday. “If you do that, that should be automatic”. “It’ll be interesting to go back and look at the game and see what we can do. We’re anxious about the Celtics right now”.
This Celtics-Wizards series is one of the first true on-court rounds of that multi-year, multi-team, multi-superstar battle. “In each of these two games, I think that our offense and our turnovers in that run separated the game”. “We can’t respond that way”. I’m not saying that was the right thing to do.
“You guys were good”, Brooks said in the huddle as shown on TNT.
Wall’s all-star rival, Thomas, was effectively shut down.
This was a big win for Washington, but it was especially enjoyable for one player not on the floor.
San Antonio Spurs guard Manu Ginobili (20) shoots as Houston Rockets forward Ryan Anderson defends during the first half in Game 4 of an NBA basketball second-round playoff series, Sunday, May 7, 2017, in Houston.
“They were allowing them to be very physical with me, coming off ball screens, coming off pindowns”, Thomas said.
According to Celtics stat guru Dick Lipe (as relayed by CSNNE’s Abby Chin), the 73 second-half points allowed were the most but the Celtics in a playoff game since May 24, 1987 and are the fourth most in franchise history.
The Wizards evened the best-of-seven series 2-2 after the Celtics won the first two games in Boston.
“We’ve got to play hard”, Gortat said. “I’ll make the adjustments”.
“It’s the outcome for my actions”, Oubre said Saturday, according to CSNmidatlantic.com. IU play the same way each and every night. Fans chanted “Kelly Oubre!” on a few occasions as Olynyk finished 5 of 9 for 14 points.
“When LeBron is shooting the 3 ball the way he is, at the rate he’s shooting it, they’re hard”, Toronto coach Dwane Casey said. “I just wanted to come in and just be physical with him”.
