Stipe Miocic v Junior Dos Santos

May 14 07:35 2017

This is a stacked fight card, which will be headlined by heavyweight champion Stipe Miocic as he defends the belt against former titleholder Junior dos Santos.

Ready to hold UFC gold again, Dos Santos is now looking to become a two-time UFC champion and is so confident of a win, that he has even challenged boxing heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua to a fight to determine who the toughest man on the planet is. Miocic stopped Overeem in four minutes and 27 seconds in his only title defense. The knockout win marked Miocic’s fifth consecutive KO finish, and his fourth to have come in the opening round. You get the feeling that every punch could end things quick here in the first round. dos Santos rolls to the fence, and looked a little trapped over there, but Miocic didn’t try to punish. “I said ‘OK, it’s time to (leave soccer) and invest in it'”. A few big heavy inside leg kicks from dos Santos, and there’s swelling on Miocic’s leg.

“He’s a real deal in our division”, Dos Santos said.

The 34-year-old Miocic claimed his crown with a first-round knockout of Fabricio Werdum in May 2016 in Brazil.

“I don’t care. Look, I just want to go home and relax”, Miocic said.

While I still believe the featherweight bout between Frankie Edgar and Yair Rodriguez is the most intriguing and feel like a dominant performance from Joanna Jedrzejczyk should catapult her to a new level of stardom, the most important fight of the night is undeniably the heavyweight championship main event. And the audience at Dallas’ American Airlines Arena also will see women’s strawweight champion Joanna Jedrzejczyk defend her title against Jessica Andrade.

I wish I could say more about this match, but it was just that short. In 2014, dos Santos won a hard-fought five-round decision over Miocic in Phoenix.

Lesnar and Velasquez both had career-defining victories that made SportsCentre highlight reels and thrust them into the wider conversation, while Miocic has simply gone about his business and strung together win after win.

Since then, Miocic has went on to put together an incredible win streak, improve his game, and become the heavyweight champ.

“No one is taking this belt from me”.

There’s no shame in losing to an opponent like Gadelha, and with Saturday’s win proving the Markos submission was no fluke, it’s fair to assume that Casey should rightfully be ranked somewhere around the top-five in the division.

Eddie Alvarez (28-5), who lost his lightweight championship to Conor McGregor at UFC 205 in NY last November, fights on the preliminary card against Dustin Poirier (21-5). The middleweight fight between Krzysztof Jotko (19-1) and David Branch (20-3) was moved up to the five-bout main card.

Rounding out the pay-per-view portion, welterweights Demian Maia and Jorge Masvidal meet in an intriguing contest that could determine the next challenger for Tyron Woodley at 170lbs.
