Hunter Strickland, not Bryce Harper, to blame for Memorial Day dust-up

Enraged, the Washington slugger charged the mound, wildly fired his helmet and traded punches to the head with reliever Hunter Strickland, setting off a furious brawl Monday during the Nationals’ 3-0 win over the San Francisco Giants.

Each also has been fined an undisclosed amount.

Most players would agree with this statement from the 38-year old, but unfortunately for them and Beltre, it won’t ever be eliminated from the game because of baseball’s unwritten rules.

Bryce Harper said he was too engrossed with watching the Food Network to check out replays of Monday’s fight with Giants right-hander Hunter Strickland. Harper took exception to the beanball, charging the mound and throwing punches with the pitcher.

Strickland, 28, hit Harper in apparent retaliation for the two home runs Harper hit against him way back during the 2014 National League Division Series (NLDS), a series the Giants won, CBSSports.com reports. Per the official Major League Baseball release, they ruled that Strickland threw at Harper intentionally, thus his more harsh punishment.

Bryce Harper, who has been a staunch advocate for making baseball fun again, provided MLB fans its most entertaining Memorial Day moment.

Ray Knight, who you may remember was the MVP in the 1986 World Series for the Mets, is now a network analyst for the Nationals, explained Strickland insulted Harper badly that night when he stared down Bryce as he circled the bases.

The former player says he only watched Hunter-Strickland I on his phone and that it perhaps had not been done justice.

“He’s great for a cool quote…that’s hilarious to me, ” Clippard said.

When asked his opinion of the incident, Beltre said it was a sensitive issue, but he wouldn’t be very pleased if he got beaned for hitting a home run.

“I know Buster has our back”, Strickland said.

Even when he had to spend long stretches of time in the Washington dugout as his teammates piled up hits, Gonzalez never really got cold. Washington manager Dusty Baker said there is no need for the Nationals to retaliate against the Giants because he believes Strickland was acting on his own.

“I know he (Harper) took him deep in the playoffs a couple of times”. Having seen the incident on television while attending school at nearby Stanford, swimming star Katie Ledecky tweeted a note to her friend Harper, offering, “If you end up suspended, come on down to Palo Alto and hang out at the pool for a day.”. So, uh, thanks, I guess.
