The iMac (2017) was announced by Apple’s VP of engineering, John Ternus. That’s the same price the new 13-inch MacBook Pro will be starting at, too. The display resolutions on the all-in-ones are staying the same, but the underlying technology is getting a boost to provide 500 nits of brightness, which should lead to a 43 percent increase in brightness over the older models. The display is paired with thinner bezels, keeping the overall size in check, and resulting in a total weight of just 1 lbs. Yes, let that sink in. Following that, we saw the introduction of watchOS 4 and a preview of what Apple is planning to deliver with the next iteration of macOS, High Sierra. On the notebook side of things, MacBooks will get Intel Kaby Lake processors and faster SSDs.
This means that the 5K model will be able to push up to 5.5 teraflops, which makes it a very competitive device for VR. The regular 21.5 inched variant gets the Iris Plus 640 GPU, and the 21.5-inched 4K variant gets Radeon Pro 555 & 560 GPUs.
For customers with slightly less workload-heavy needs, the standard iMac desktop is also getting a boost.
The iMac Pro has been designed keeping in mind the necessities of professionals who need to work with extensive amounts of data sets and use cases, which require huge processing power and memory capabilities.
The 21.5-inch model can be configured up to 32GB of RAM, while the 27-inch can get up to 64 GB of RAM. There is a drop for the 21.5-inch 4K iMac though, which is going down to $1,499 for the cheapest configuration.
The iMac Pro will be available in December. More affordable 8 and 10 core options are available as well. Armed with an all-new Radeon Pro Vega graphics chip offering three times faster performance over any other iMac GPU, Apple touted the desktop as a computer built for video editing, virtual reality, and “gameplay at max settings”.
The iMac Pro features four microphones, stereo speakers, and a 1080p FaceTime HD camera. It is, of course, an AiO and it is based around a chassis holding a 27-inch Retina 5K display.
An absolute beast from all fronts.
Although it might look like an iMac (aside from the grey enclosure), the iMac Pro promises 80 percent more cooling capacity than a standard model, and supports up to 4TB of SSD storage and 128GB of ECC memory. Even though the Siri Speaker is a nice device, I would say that it wasn’t the biggest announcement of Apple on Monday. Moreover, the new models flaunt the Force Touch trackpad, which allows for more room to gesture and click.
