Lawmakers talk more security, packing a gun after shooting

Steve Scalise is the third-ranking House Republican and the hospital treating him tweeted that his status was more precarious than described earlier in the day by colleagues.

Authorities have since announced that the shooter, James T. Hodgkinson of Belleville, Ill., had died after being shot by police.

Capitol Police officers who were in Scalise’s security detail wounded the shooter.

The FBI will take over investigations for this incident.

Mr Scalise is the third-highest-ranked member of the Republican leadership in the House, and has the hard job of trying to keep order in the fractious party ranks and rounding up votes for Bills. Spicer said the president was also briefed by Scalise’s medical team and spoke with Capitol Police officer Crystal Griner, who was shot in the ankle during the attack on a Republican Congressional baseball practice.

The President has canceled a visit to the Department of Labor later this afternoon to talk about apprenticeships and sign an executive order. Suspect believed in custody.

The FBI said Hodgkinson had been living out of his vehicle in the Alexandria area since March, and urged the public to come forward with any additional information about the suspect – including why the IL suspect might have been in the D.C. area.

Texas Rep. Joe Barton, still in his baseball uniform, told reporters a shooter came out to the practice and opened fire, shooting at Rep. Trent Kelly, R-Miss., who plays third base. They’re tasked with protecting the members, employees, visitors and facilities of Congress, according to their website. 11Alive efforts to reach his office have not yet been successful.

“House Democrats praying for our House GOP [and] Senate GOP baseball colleagues after hearing about the horrific shooting“, Rep. Ruben J. Kihuen, D-Nev., wrote on Twitter. Many praised the message of unity, and the appreciation the entire congressional community feels for the Capitol Police. “Rep. Scalise and I may stand on opposite sides of the aisle as our parties’ whips, but at the end of the day we are friends, fellow Representatives, and fellow Americans”, Hoyer said in a statement.
