Should Photographers and Videographers Buy The New Surface Pro?

It is quite possible, however, that Apple’s shift to an increased focus on productivity was in fact influenced by Microsoft’s Surface lineup. While some devices are more niche than others, both the Surface Studio and the Surface Laptop have won accolades for being well-built hardware with strong attention to detail and very solid features.

Microsoft’s Edge is an interesting problem. I am using the new cobalt blue Alcantara Type cover (an additional $159.99) with the Pro and functionally, it operates just like the last generation; I will say that the cover does smell a bit foul out of the box but that issue quickly goes away after a day or two.

Microsoft’s new Surface Laptop is available in Burgundy. You can’t install Chrome, Firefox, Opera or any other browser; they’re not available in the Windows Store and are highly unlikely to be – though given that Apple’s iTunes is coming to the Windows Store, I wouldn’t say never.

As I mentioned above, I want a better touch experience in Windows and in the programs that I use on a regular basis.

Microsoft announced that customers can now purchase its new Surface Laptop and Surface Pro PCs.

Strictly speaking Windows 10 S is Windows 10 Pro but with some limitations that are created to, in Microsoft’s words, “be streamlined for simplicity, security and speed”. The price has also gone up, from $60 to $100.

The new Windows 10 S operating system should just run apps that come from the Windows Store, but this might turn out to be problematic for the majority of Windows users. The most expensive configuration comes with an Intel Core i7 chip, 16 GB of RAM, Intel Iris Plus Graphics 640, and 512 GB of SSD storage.

I’m going to get this out of the way now, because it underpins the rest of the review: Surface Pro is a fascinating stab at a hybrid of laptop and tablet. No USB-C, Thunderbolt 3, support for external GPUs, or other cutting-edge features are present.

True hubris is a person trying to use a Microsoft Surface Pro like a laptop.

For those who want to step outside these constraints, Microsoft is offering a free upgrade to Windows 10 Pro until 31 December 2017. But I’m certainly not one. As I said, that’s the model I’d recommend most people buy.

Over the weekend I acclimated more to the new Surface platform, and feel like I was able to grasp a good understanding of what it means to photographers.

Add the Surface Type keyboard (for £125 rrp) and the weight is 1.1Kg, which is somewhat more than most flagship, slimline laptops these days. It’s got upgraded internals including the all new i7 7660U processor and a larger battery. Crucially, the Surface Pro is still extremely thin and light, but it doesn’t come cheap. Every previous Surface update has felt as if it moved the bar upwards in at least some small ways. With the advances that Microsoft made with the Surface Pen and the power of the processor in the Surface Pro, I was able to dodge and burn images, retouch skin and genuinely build final pieces while sitting on the beach listening to the ocean.

Media response to the Laptop and Pro have been very positive but one elephant keeps entering the room – the lack of a USB-C Thunderbolt port. Flammer reiterated that Surface did not follow trends and innovated via things like the full-sized USB-A 3.0 connector, the mini-DisplayPort, and the Surface connector which works across the Pro, Laptop and Book range using the same dock.
