“After only tweeting once Saturday to promote “infrastructure week”, Trump sent a flurry Sunday morning, slamming the “#FakeNews MSM” for allegedly not reporting on economic progress and labeling Democrats “obstructionists”. He said he deserved more credit for economic gains and stock market confidence.
But after stepping away from the Capitol Hill spotlight, where he’s always seemed comfortable, the 56-year-old veteran lawman now confronts the same question long faced by Washington officials after their government service.
President Trump’s personal lawyer delivered a five-minute denial of Comey’s accusations.
Bharara says Trump called him twice before the inauguration, to “shoot the breeze”. It was at this dinner that Trump demanded loyalty, although the president continues to deny it. Comey’s testimony on the issue was painfully detailed and credible, however, and it disturbed him enough that he immediately wrote down the exact words used.
After the election but before the inauguration, Trump asked Bharara to stay on as US attorney in Manhattan when they met at Trump Tower.
The requests come on the heels of explosive allegations by Comey and a string of strong denials by Trump over the abrupt dismissal of the Federal Bureau of Investigation director and the circumstances surrounding it. But he nearly certainly would avail himself as a witness to Mueller in any obstruction of justice investigation centered on his firing, or to further discuss requests he received from Trump that he interpreted as directives.
Jay Sekulow called such a leak “unprecedented”. No, I didn’t say that and I didn’t say the other.
Trump made the remarks during a joint news conference with Romanian President Klaus Iohannis at the White House Friday afternoon. Richman confirmed to Fox News he met with Senate lawmakers through the office of special counsel Robert Mueller, who is spearheading the investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election.
When pressed if he would be willing to testify under oath about his version of the events, Trump answered, “100 percent”.
Republican National Committee chairwoman Ronna Romney McDaniel noted on “Fox News Sunday” that no evidence has yet been produced of collusion between Trump’s campaign and Russian Federation, which the US intelligence community and elected officials of both parties conclude meddled in last year’s election.
“It keeps persisting, so it’s time to put an end to this”, she said.
The general concern is that the Senate committee could potentially make the special counsel investigation more hard, by requesting evidence or interviews from people who may be key witnesses for Mueller. Blasting News reported on Rod Rosenstein saying that he was giving Mueller free rein as the attorney generals might also be under investigation.
As perhaps should have been expected, the most important takeaway from Comey’s testimony may be what he didn’t say.
