Kovalev is scheduled to fight Andre Ward in a light heavyweight championship boxing match Saturday in Las Vegas.
Ward improved to 32-0 with 16 knockouts as he held onto three of the four major boxing belts that he snatched from Kovalev by winning the first fight in November by a slim unanimous decision.
On the undercard, two-time Olympic gold medalist Guillermo Rigondeaux defeated Moises Flores with a controversial fight-ending punch at the close of the first round to retain his WBA junior featherweight title.
Ward turned his dominance into a win in the eighth round, a right hook and ferocious blows to the body leading to a stoppage.
Kathy Duva, Kovalev’s promoter, said she would appeal the decision to the Nevada State Athletic Commission because of the low blows and the failure of Weeks to deduct points from Ward.
“You know it’s good that he’s believing himself right now, that he’s got the key for me, but he didn’t get the key. Don’t want to talk about what was ahead of our fight revenge, in which I will not leave ward no chance”.
“What do you wanna hear from me?”
The only problem, however, was that Kovalev exhausted as the fight dragged on.
As CBS Sports noted, it is expected to be a very close bout again but Ward can again seize the advantage if he dictates the style of the fight.
In fact, Klimas insists Ward has done less to promote the event, knowing it would negatively impact Kovalev’s revenue. When Kovalev backed into the ropes, Ward landed a left uppercut that appeared low. As far as media goes, I’m not interested in that.
By Rounds 2 and 3, Ward began landing short, hard shots on the inside, while Kovalev landed right hands from a distance. The casual fans who will want to watch Mayweather-McGregor had likely made up their mind on whether or not they were watching Ward-Kovalev II by Wednesday.
“I told the press that I only trained Andre for a knockout twice”, Hunter said. Some people thought I won, some people thought I lost. I think he goes for the kill and tries to finish Ward. Chief among the cleaning agents are Andre Ward and Sergey Kovalev, whose rematch in the early hours tomorrow reminds us what boxing is really all about. I want to thank my haters – they motivate me to keep going.
He said he thought Ward was hitting him below the belt but that he was OK.
Not only are these the two elite fighters in their division, but they are also two of the best fighters in the sport, and tonight they go head-to-head once again in one of the most eagerly anticipated rematches of the year.
Ward was paid $6.5 million for the rematch, while Kovalev got a percentage of the gate and the pay-per-view.
