US Open filled with limitless possibilities, few stars

June 18 05:48 2017

What a day for Justin Thomas. It didn’t get any better when he finally made the green.

This is the first time in 25 years that the U.S. Open has played as a par 72.

There were 18 rounds in the 60s, starting with one for the record book.

Casey’s five birdies were one short of the U.S. Open record last matched the day before by Adam Hadwin.

Other notable players failing to make the cut included British Open champion Henrik Stenson (147), former Masters winners Charl Schwartzel (147) of South Africa and Australian Adam Scott (147) and double Masters victor Bubba Watson (148).

The tournament-leading foursome held a one-shot lead over a trio of contenders that includes first-round leader Rickie Fowler. So there he stood at two under and seemingly out of the picture.

“The big thing is going to be just driving it well tomorrow”, Fowler said.

“It was a good display, all my own fault, but a good display of what can happen if you get out of position on this golf course, which is what I did on 14. It was a good round for me”. I got off to a good start but it sort of caught up with me as the round went on.

Thomas finished in style, and it had nothing to do with his hot pink trousers.

Fleetwood’s second shot on the par-five 18th finished just 47 yards from the pin.

That appeared to prompt 1995 US PGA champion Steve Elkington to write on Twitter that “Rory is so bored playiing golf…without Tiger [Woods] the threshold is prolly 4 majors with 100mill in bank”.

“The finish was awesome. We all play golf, and it’s Father’s Day weekend, so we thought it would be fun to get out here for a day”, Lexi Jonas said.

He might need one at this rate.

With no rain in the immediate forecast and the chance that winds could pick up, Erin Hills may finally show its teeth.

Greg Norman and Vijay Singh are the only golfers to record two rounds of 63 in the majors. I’m just so excited to give myself a great chance to win this golf tournament. But I’ll play a lot, I just won’t practice too much. Miller’s 63 came in the final round of the 1973 Open at legendary Oakmont, annually ranked as one of the most hard courses in the world. A run of 26 consecutive holes without a bogey ended when he rammed his long birdie putt on No. 9 about 12 feet by the hole and narrowly missed the par putt.

But three costly bogeys on the back nine left Johnson needing to pick up strokes down the stretch which proved beyond him.

Asked if he would have been able to recover from such a mistake earlier in his career, Casey added: “In my good seasons, yes, but there have been times when I struggled, so probably not!”

But the work is not done.

Rogness, who is from the Milwaukee area, said he and Blise are longtime golfers. “That was goal in the week to be in contention on Sunday whether it’s two in front, two in back or tied for the lead”. His best finish came in his first start at the event in 2013, when he tied for 10th at Merion.

Of the five other players who shot a 63 in the third round at a major, none went on to win. “So we’re breaking down all kinds of barriers”.
