As the Fourth of July approaches people are flocking to buy fireworks.

Across East Tennessee, there will be several Fourth of July celebrations. Before purchasing these types of fireworks, be sure to check your local ordinances and follow the instructions to avoid accidents and injuries.

This time of year, business also is booming.

As Fire Station One loomed above, Griffin and fellow District Chief Adrian Fernandez explained how to prevent firework injuries from dampening July 4 celebrations.

“We have more than 11,000 people a year injured by fireworks”, Burns said. Temporary stands can be used for consumer fireworks sales between June 13 and July 8.

Nemacolin Woodlands Resort, located along Route 40 in Farmington, is hosting two nights of fireworks displays this year. Sales of those were $345 million in 2016.

The online portal allows fireworks wholesalers to register in Iowa so that they can provide consumer fireworks to retail sellers. Previously, the only fireworks that were legal in Iowa were novelties such as sparklers, caps and snakes.

“We have issued a zero-tolerance order on arrests related to possession and use of unsafe fireworks”, he said. We not only want to remind everyone to be safe during these activities, but to also remind everyone of the laws and city ordinances regarding fireworks.

Use a clear, open area and keep the audience a safe distance from the site where the fireworks will be set off.

“One of the worst is sparklers”, he said.

Be prepared, be safe and be responsible is what the State Fire Marshal’s Office says when it comes to enjoying fireworks during the long holiday weekend. The intensity of the heat can burn clothing and burn the hands and feet of children.

Dr. Suner reported that Rhode Island experiences approximately 200 fireworks related injuries each year and that the national statistics reveal that approximately half of these injuries are to the fingers and hands while most of the rest are to the face and eyes. Injuries from fireworks accounted for 11,900 emergency room visits and 11 deaths in 2015.

“I like to tell people to have a designated shooter”, Apel said.

The department also advises reading the directions, though even with ideal use, things can go wrong.
