At Friday’s UFC 214 pre-fight press conference, in response to Lesnar, Jones said, “I’ll handle DC first, then I’ll handle Brock”.
That’s sensible advice as though Jones holds a previous unanimous decision victory over Daniel Cormier, he has fought once in the past two and a half years since then due to his antics outside of the Octagon.
Everything about Jones’ behaviour suggests he might have stronger feelings than he acknowledges.
Three title fights illustrate the quality of the UFC 214 card on Saturday at Honda Center, but the pay-per-view card will include two other compelling fights that show the depth of the Anaheim event.
“A guy like Daniel, he has my full undivided attention”.
“To hear him have that level of faith in me and pretty much tell me that it’s already done, I just need to go out there and do what I’m capable of”. A lot of times you hear these stories about athletes who ruined their career and they go away and no one knows what happened to them or they’re bankrupt or they end up in jail. “That’s what makes me do the things I do”. That is not going to sit right with a competitor like Cormier and he has not been shy about calling Jones out.
Also on this episode, top UFC light-heavyweight Jimi Manuwa previews his 214 fight against another heavy-handed striker in Volkan Oezdemir.
Also featured is the welterweight title bout between champ Tyron “The Chosen One” Woodley and challenger Demian Maia (#1) and Cris Cyborg and Tonya “Triple Threat” Evinger for the women’s featherweight title. Cormier, meanwhile, whose only professional defeat came the hands of Jones, had many questions about his weight coming into today. “There will be no grudge match”. Cormier is clearly the number two dog in the division as he has fought well with the belt but his title reign always sat under the shadow of Jones. There’s no way that him and I stay 1-1.
Jones did very well for himself on the ground, which was somewhat surprising considering how good Cormier is in that aspect of fighting. Yes, they got beaten up. The UFC deemed this incident as a breach of the Athlete Code of Conduct Policy and stripped the UFC light heavyweight championship from Jon Jones before suspending him indefinitely. Cormier has put together a ideal resume as a professional fighter outside of his lone loss to Jones in 2015 and he’s wanted nothing more than to erase that defeat with this rematch on Saturday night.
“Outside of that, to me, it’s the highest level of mixed martial arts people can truly experience”. It’s safe to say much of the viewing public didn’t care for Jones’ actions outside of the cage, but that didn’t necessarily stop them from enjoying his actions inside of it.
Even though Jones, officially, hasn’t been champion for almost 2 years, he has virtually cleaned the division so a move to heavyweight would make sense.
