McMaster says the college students living at apartments are safe.

“It definitely went a step above even that particular one”, he said.

Authorities in the city of 880,000 said Monday morning there had been a number of injuries from trees crashing through homes and structure fires, but no reported deaths.

So when he ran into a blocked road in Kendall, Florida, he got out of his vehicle, brought out his ax and started chopping away at downed trees blocking the roadways, CBS Miami reports.

Anxious relatives, generous volunteers and frantic neighbors turned to social media after Hurricane Irma wiped out electricity and cell service to many communities around Florida, cutting off most contact with remote islands in the Keys.

While Irma was a bad hurricane, it was not the worst hurricane Florida has ever seen, not by a long shot. More than 100,000 were in the dark in Georgia. That toll included 10 killed in Cuba and state media said most of those died in Havana, where seawater surged deep into residential neighborhoods. About 2,000 customers there are still without power.

With Hurricane Jose behind Irma, for the first time in recorded history, there were two hurricanes with 150 miles per hour wind speeds in the Atlantic at the same time.

More than 200,000 people huddled in shelters in the Sunshine State.

In the dark: Most of the city (72%) is without power, the mayor said. She says the family had “decided all of a sudden” they needed to leave.

“Until Jose is farther along on its loop, the models are likely to have large errors, and we should not take too much comfort (or indulge in too much angst) over a particular set of model runs”, Weather Underground meteorologist Jeff Masters said. He also described downed power lines and other debris. The town has suspended all emergency calls because “it’s too unsafe”.

On the forecast track, the center of Irma will move near the northwestern coast of the Florida Peninsula this morning, cross the eastern Florida Panhandle into southern Georgia this afternoon, and move through southwestern Georgia and eastern Alabama tonight and Tuesday. No injuries have been reported yet.

With Harvey hitting Houston in late August, 2017 is the first year that the USA was hit by two category 4 Atlantic hurricanes.

Several areas in Tampa experienced high wind gusts and heavy rain for several hours. There was also a chance a tornado could strike the area.

Ocean water pushed onshore from Tropical Storm Irma is coming over the Battery in downtown Charleston at high tide.

That is almost at the same level as Hurricane Matthew last October.

Residents who had been told they would not be able to return home until Tuesday are now cleared to return, said Betsy Clayton, the public information officer for the Lee County government.
